Undiscovered Country #3

I dont want to sound too gushy with how much Im enjoying this series as were only three issues in. Theres a potential danger that the style could become formulaic in the delivery of flashback and twist. We can all probably name a few stories that have relied on style over substance as things dragged on. Thankfully, I can see absolutely no sign of this here; further bolstered by the discussion pages which I do love to see in a book like this. Continued thumbs up for the fictitious quotes dripping with satirical intent at the end of each issue. Its only January but this is setting a seriously high bar for the year to come. Just when you think you have things somewhat figured out, boom! Nothing is as it seems, or is it? I don't know! The conclusion of Undiscovered Country #3 marks that point where you know you're along for the ride or not. To me, I think this creative team succeeded in giving us a reason to come back for more because this is a brilliant story woven. Each issue of Undiscovered Country has been a surprise. It's difficult to guess what to expect and what's in store for readers. It's rare to find an experience where you really have no idea what's coming. “Wild ride” is a too simplistic way to describe a series that seems to have taken inspiration from so many things. While I enjoyed this issue I can see the concerns people have. Hearing that this can go 50 plus issues is a daunting idea but I believe these two can pull it off. While it might not seem like it now I could just imagine 50 issues of this building a huge world and to a huge payoff. I'm excited to see where it goes but I'm also scared it might not be worth all the work to get through it all.

Man, to hear the writers talk about it and to see the critic score, you'd think this comic was some amazing, inspired story. But it's not at all. It feels like no one wants to be writing it or drawing it. No one cares. Easily one of the most disappointing indies I've read. I got caught up in the writers' hype and now I'm reading a shitty indie title from a team that I only like one third of.

I know right? And it sucks because I know these writer's can do good indie titles. Snyder had Wytches and AmVamp. Soule had Curse Words. Here it just feels so manufactured. And maybe it's because this Mad-Max type stuff isn't really in Snyder or Soule's wheelhouse? I can't quite place it. I know they're great writers but for the life of me I can't understand the appeal the critics see for this book.

I only know Snyder from his big two work, which is definitely hit or miss for me. Same with Soule, although, I did enjoy his work. Especially his Daredevil. If you want to hear what I expected this story to be, go listen to the Stegman and Friends podcast episode called "All Aboard the Soule Train." Soule and Snyder talk about this series in great detail, and it sounds so interesting, and *none* of that is truly present in the final product.
