  I went into this comic having no idea what to expect, but ended up being completely sold on the concept, story and heroes within. I'm intrigued by the potential danger these heroes must overcome, especially since they're all very much human. So often comics jam as much information as they can into the first issue to setup the wild ride ahead which typically means a lot of exposition heavy, pace slogging pages to get through. This comic however, has a ton of information passed on to the reader, all very naturally and well paced. Read Full Review

  Multiversity Comics - Brian Salvatore

  The biggest problem with this book is that it is only a miniseries. Parker and Laming really killed this first issue, and Dynamite, in general, has been bringing in a lot of really great talent as of late. Hopefully, the success of this book will lead to more stories with these characters, hopefully from this creative team. I really did not expect to find this book as one of, if not the, best #1 of the year thus far, but I'm hard pressed to find a debut issue I enjoyed this much in the past 12 months. I think that be launching a number of miniseries you provide great jumping on points for new readers to try new things, let creators tell the story they want to tell, and gauge interest for maybe further stories of those same characters.   Smaller publishers such as Dynamite have been putting out excellent titles for years, and Kings Watch only reaffirms their commitment to please readers. Sure, Marvel is stepping up its game with the Infinity crossover, Image releases high-quality titles seemingly without effort, DC tries hard to revamp its New 52, but be sure to look out for the smaller guy.   I would definitely recommend this for people who love the characters to try and make their own judgement and for new readers who want something that has heroes and heroic adventures but is not the same old comic heroes the Big Two give, these guys are legend for a reason and this is a good place to check them out and not have to read the decades of back-catalogue.   For a book that hasn't even let the so called Kings Watch meet yet, it was a great time. Dynamite Entertainment has a strong team on this book and I really can't wait to see how this adventure plays out. As a longtime fan of these characters and setting, I've been looking for a book that captures the spirit of these stories, without having to quantify the tone of the era. Parker, Laming, and Boyd are on the right path. While Kings Watch #1 isn't quite the perfect adventure, it's darn close. Read Full Review

  I really enjoyed the book and plan to dive back in, but I'm thinking of moving to trade as I am generally disavowing floppies as a relic of a past time like the iceman, steam engines and grammar. The minor nitpicks were not things that I really noticed upon my initial reading but only grew apparent to me in the course of me having to write this review. When reviewing a book, it forces me to be more critical in my take on the book but I assure you this was a fun read on what looks to be a good action book. I would love to hear from fans of these particular characters and please let me know what are the essential elements those characters need to have to be true to what you like. Read Full Review

  "Kings Watch" #1 is an inviting setup that doesn't wallow in exposition, but instead offers just enough of the three primaries to trigger shared collective unconscious of readers everywhere. Every comic book reader has some frame of reference for Phantom, Flash Gordon and Mandrake, and Parker welcomes them all into this story. The writer also offers no guarantees, except that "Kings Watch" is filled with so much potential that the writer has no choice but to prove this title to be an entertaining read. Read Full Review

  The colorization, however, is a bit more subtle than in the usual capes book as there is a heavy used of subdued tones in combination with lighting that produce a duller and less diverse result that do emulate the past quite well, which is fitting considering the characters. It is by no mean an extravaganza of rainbows like other books, nor does it feature some particularly complex coloring techniques, yet it is competent nonetheless. While it may not be the most new-reader friendly and some explanations could have been truly helpful to let some readers appreciate some of the characters completely, Jeff Parker still seems to get who the main characters are as he plays with this modern pulp world with some good art by Marc Laming and some competent colorization by Jordan Boyd.   Overall I think this is shaping up to be one of Dynamite's strongest team-up books yet. Parker was a smart choice for writer because he can really tell a high-quality adventure without being too serious.
