Wonder Woman Annual #1

After what I would call the wreck which was the Convergence story arc, it was nice to come back to this series and see such a spectacular issue. It was most definitely well worth the wait, and I truly can't wait to see what next month has to offer. Read Full Review

Sometimes you have to grade on the curve. Some find that spineless or even a kind of cheating. But at least the practice lets you recognize and reward effort and, in a rough way, support improvement. Meredith and David Finch have improved over the course of their short run onWonder Woman. Truthfully, the book is still loaded with flaws. Readers get two stories in this annual and while the art was great in both, the first story felt rushed while the second felt unnecessary.  I don't know which is worse.  I do know that I can't recommend this Annual except as a way for readers to wrap up the War-Torn story arc and look at the pretty pictures. There are positives to take away from Wonder Woman Annual #1. The series finally has some forward momentum, it really feels like it's going somewhere. David Finch's splash pages are gorgeous (though conversely his smaller panels lose too much detail). And there is enough intriguing groundwork to build upon. This incomplete resolution makes Wonder Woman Annual #1 feel disheartening in too many ways. The Amazons still come off as thugs more than warriors. Other than Wonder Woman herself, the emotions in this story might as well have come from Kristen Stewart. The Amazons are in need of redemption. But by all accounts, they're a long ways from getting it and their efforts in achieving it are haphazard at best. And for the tribe that birthed Wonder Woman, they deserve better. Read Full Review

The second half of the issue helps make the entire arc more meaningful and is some of the better writing by Meredith during this run. However the second piece is not able to make up for the shortcomings of the first half and overall it's a disappointing finale. Read Full Review

With the answers of Wonder Woman finally told, it is now up to Diana to rebuild her society. The Amazons finally have their true leader reunited and the imposed over thrown, Diana once again heralds in a new age with her lost sisters. Read Full Review

After the last few issues being sort of blah.....I was really impressed with the way that Finch wrapped up her and some of Azzarello's lingering plots. Between the 2 stories in the Annual, we finally find out why the Amazons are so distrustful and bitter towards men. Hippolyte's mother(the former queen) was poisoned to death by a man. A very young looking Derinoe was infatuated with Hipppolyta and upon saving Hippolyta from an assassination attempt, was struck by a mystical dagger that turned her into the old crone we've come to know. As for the battle between Diana and Donna, I really enjoyed it. Diana was very in character with telling Donna the real meaning of being an Amazon which is to embrace their fears and build one another up. Th e best part was that she was able to stop Donna, not with a bladed weapon, not with deception, but with her Magic Lasso. Being bound in the lasso showed Donna the horrific truth of her programming by Derinoe and the look on her face states how horrified she was over what she had done previously. I have to say between the characterization, revelations, and amazing art, this Annual was well worth the wait! The Finchs may continue on IMO. more

Decent final chapter but good lord did some plot points just get glossed over. Ok, so the random alien dudes who had hives of random people just went home after Cyborg said he could fix it? What about all those people then? I mean Diana was crying over them a few issues ago and now the aliens who did all that, get to go home scott free? Also I hate what they did to Donna Troy, HATED. She was a mindless killer who is now resigned to rotting in prison. Talk about spitting on one of the most cherished DC characters or at least Teen Titan. You can say the art is good but if I'm honest, I've seen better from David Finch. The adjunct chapter was a pleasant surprise and redeemed the issue for at least 2.5 points. The background story was almost es sential because without it a lot of plot holes are left unfilled. Overall, Wonder Woman could be doing worse. I hope the refresh (the word reboot is sort of taboo in the comic world these days...) will help Meredith find her voice because I do realize she still had some loose ends to tie up from Azzarello's run. I just hope Wonder Woman doesn't just go back to being a run of the mill comic like it used to be. more

The aliens get to go home making their story worthless, Dona is beaten easily and the amazons suddenly realize their mistakes, all this mess is caused because Hyppolita doesn't love the old lady. Too many convenient outcomes and missed opportunities to take advantage of possible great developments doomed this story....at least the art is very good

The arc concludes in a manner that is both rushed and drawn out, with the bulk of it being centred on a fight between Diana and Donna. Characterisation continues to be thin with hardly any regard for consistency, although this is beneficial for Diana since at least she acts in character for the first time since the run began. Meanwhile, Donna Troy continues to be a bastardised version of herself, with the narrative captions implying this will be the last we see of her for a while, which makes this even more disappointing. The backup story works better than the main story by giving some motivation to the arc's villain, but it also suffers from generally underwhelming writing.
