Wonder Woman #40

Perhaps the creative team has something else in mind for where the character is heading, or some other big reveal about Donna Troy or how she could be presented as a hero and not a villain, but at the moment the direction of this series remains confusing. The potential is there for this series to succeed with this creative team, only it would appear that the wrong pieces are being used at the wrong time. Instead this needs a back-to-basics approach and to focus on what makes this character popular to begin with. With the onset of Convergence, it allows for a bit of a break hopefully and to refocus the series to get back on the desired track, as it started out well with this team, but has been gradually declining in its coherence since then. I liked this issue of Wonder Woman.  Sure, I have a bunch of questions about Donna Troy and what the hell is going on on Themyscira, but I still liked it.  Meredith Finch gives us a strong, determined Diana who is an Amazon, the God of War and a member of the Justice League.  David Finch's art continues to be great and is almost worth the price of admission alone. In the end it's another lackluster issue that doesn't seem to be meeting its potential, even after the auspicious issue last month. A treasure of my pull box since day one, Wonder Woman has been one of most consistently enjoyed series since I started reading comics. My hope is that Meredith stops pulling punches and brings the quality of the book back up to its former glory. Yet given the problematic interpretation of the character in issues past, it might be damning with faint praise to call this issue of Wonder Woman the best one yet. The artwork feels more refined here, and with less outrageous digressions - like Wonder Woman holding a teddy bear for dramatic effect - it might be possible for more readers to give this book a chance. But if Meredith Finch can give Wonder Woman a chance to really be the unstoppable heroine that the popular imagination has built her up to be, then this series might stand a fighting chance. It's clear that the Finch's are struggling to figure out what to do with their Wonder Woman run. The action is mostly boring, and the characters are now at their lowest point. Donna Troy's actions left me searching for an explanation, and I don't see her having any sort of a positive impact on this series. This run has promised so much, but nothing has been delivered so far. To make things worse, Convergence is starting, meaning we will now have to wait a few months for this arc to conclude. It will be awhile before this series will get another chance to redeem itself. Read Full Review

I really don't know what Meredith Finch wants to do with Wonder Woman. After five issues in, I'm still confused on what she's trying to do. Diana is just bickering with random Amazons about how she is not taking her responsibilities seriously. Also getting way too many guest appearances in a title that previously was guest appearance free. IMO, too many guest appearances is a sign of weak writing. It's a gimmick meant to cover up empty plots and pointless dialogue. Previously Wonder Woman felt like a genuine epic, now it's relying on pretty art by David Finch (which has actually gotten sloppy on a few panels in this issue) to carry the title. I dunno man, I just feel like this title is going nowhere. Wonder Woman used to be consistently ran ked as a top 100 comic during Azzarello's tenure but I highly doubt WW is ranking this year. And I hate how they're reinventing Donna Troy into a soulless puppet for villainous schemes. It's just not sitting well with me. I dunno what's holding Meredith Finch back, every time I think she's about to shake things up, she lets her foot off the gas and just shifts to neutral. Do something crazy with the story Meredith, I dare ya. And no, having a random villain from the aftermath of the First Born falling into the pit doesn't count. more
