Sep 14, 2021Ultimately, these creators had a very specific vision for this story, and it's an important one (albeit one that will hopefully feel like a historical relic sooner rather than later). But I'm never convinced that the character in this is the Jessica Cruz who will put on the ring. This is the latest in DC's series of youth oriented books that intentionally put new spins on DC characters, outside of the current canon. It's unclear if the other reviewers here are innocently unaware of this and simply prefer DC canon over plot (not uncommon) or if they are criticizing a lack of canon as a post hoc justification to give a book about a DACA student a bad review. To that end, this story actually makes more sense set in the fictional Coast City because Portland is a sanctuary city and resistant to ICE. No conflict would mean no story, which is not entertaining. This is so bad... It really has nothing to do with Green Lantern or Jessica Cruz. Why would the writer choose to make the story based in Coast City? Jessica is from Portland and Coast City is Hal Jordan's City.

I'd give this a zero if I could. The writer has Jessica in Coast City - a city that was rebuilding itself and is used to a real Green Lantern being there. Xenophobia has no home there. This is yet another piss poor attempt to say "USA bad" by vilifying I.C.E. and trying to make illegal immigrants heroes. Can DC sink no lower than this?!
