The Penguin #8

I would honestly be okay if DC just gave King the helm to all of Batman's Rogues' Gallery and let him create stories like this for other villains that may be seen as a joke. A Mr Freeze series, or heck, even a Riddler run would be so cool to read! King and the team are putting out stellar comics each time, and every time I think the next chapter can't get any better it does! Read Full Review

As subverted caper stories go, The Penguin continues to be the best one on the shelf. Kings ability to tweak structure with any given issue keeps the series fresh. Visually the series remains complex even when it seems simple. So its not surprising that The Penguin #8s day in the life story is both unconventional and exemplary. Read Full Review

It's the bookends and penultimate sequence that pull the issue together and create an outstanding sense of tension for the progressing story. Not only does it serve to clarify who the primary actors are in the coming narrative, but it does so in a fashion where each revelation about what's still to come heightens the intrigue. Just caught up to this series. My biggest problem with Tom King on this series is that he's a genius writer, he's smart and intelligent. But he's trying too hard to be Alan Moore. He likes to use profanity a lot, and it comes off edgy. He literally narrates every minute small detail into thought boxes, and it comes off as dry and sterile. Not too sure about Batman teaming up with Penguin and letting him free. That being said, maybe my expectations were low on this. But this series so far is good, and it at least explores Penguin's psychology and the criminal underworld. I hope Tom King can keep up the momentum.
