Shazam! #9

Geoff John's Shazam isn't bad, but it's got some problems that he needs to get sorted. Now that he's got the release schedule back on track, hopefully he can streamline the story a bit. This is a good title, but it should be a great title. I just hope Johns can realize the book's full potential. Read Full Review

Along with finally offering the full Marvel Family (no, I'm not calling them the Shazam Family), the comic also gives us Black Adam and the Seven Deadly Sins and characters from Oz, although the core on the issue has more to deal with Billy and his choices than a fight against such foes or new faces. While we do get an explanation here about what's been going on with our heroes' powers for the last couple of issues, it does take up the majority of the issue and doesn't feel like it really mattered by the end.  The art for the most part was great, but I'm still looking for a bit more out of this book because it seems to have stalled into an odd funk lately that I desperately want to get out of. Prelude: Two Geoff Johns books in one week. I must be dreaming. The Good: I really like the struggle within Billy this issue on what he should do. Wozenderlands is cool looking with a mixture of childhood fantasy. Art is pretty good too even if it changes quite a bit. The Bad: The fighting scene early in the issue wasn't well done in my opinion and Mind's plan seems very basic. Conclusion: Another strong chapter that is tainted by the fight scene near the start of the issue and Mister Mind's apparent plan.
