Its the second chapter of a larger story, which means that there are some explanations, and some set-ups. A fair bit of action, and Nightwing does get to be the one to discover that there will be four monsters in total. But for me, it was Spoiler, and Gotham Girl, who stole the show. Read Full Review

Where the art in Batman #7 was spotty at times, Nightwing #5 is the opposite throughout. Roge Antonio's artwork has more of an animated look to it with fluid character movements that are complimented by Chris Sotomayor's colours. The atmosphere isn't as moody as Batman #7 with Antonio using bright colours in places, but it serves the look of Nightwing and as well as making some of the latest Bat-gadgets really pop off the page, especially the Bat-beacon. The Bat-Team is united in their grief and using it to band together to help Gotham City combat hideous monsters.   They have not yet seen all of the creatures poised to terrorize the city and I'm sure that Batman still has a few more tricks up his sleeve.  This is not a monster movie where the humans will flee in terror.  These are super heroes that will stop at nothing to protect innocent civilians.  Although they may be broken due to their recent loss, they're laser focused on this task. Since Rebirth, DC has been killing it with their Bat titles. Getting such quality work from these creators makes exploring the extended Bat-Family exciting in a way I dont think it has been in quite some time. With Nightwing #5 we get to see that family working together to defeat some big big monsters and its a good time. Even though most of the action scenes are given to Batman and Batwoman, this seems like something thats going to change in the chapters to come. You'll want to get Batman #7 to fully enjoy this issue since it is the second part of the Night of The Monster Men crossover because there's no real way to appreciate this as a stand alone Nightwing issue........ since our title character doesn't really have much to do.  As a continuation though, it isn't bad, but we're just along for the ride as our heroes try to figure out what's going on and because of that, this will totally work better after the full story is released.   Read Full Review

Nightwing #5 presents a decent midway point for the “Night of the Monster Men” story, but not an exceptionally memorable Nightwing tale. Grayson is barely in half of this issue, which is fine for a crossover, and he can still, arguably, be deemed the lead of this chapter, but there is nothing here that will have readers reminiscing about “That time Nightwing fought the Monster Men.” In short, this issue is a nice reminder of Nightwing's membership in the Bat-Family, but an ancillary tale for Nightwing readers. As with Batman #7, I think the story on Nightwing #5 could be better. That being said, there are some good things on both of these comics. Two issues into this story and Night of the Monster Men and so far it has been fine. Fine is a weak word to describe anything which is why it fits. Besides the odd looking characters not much has stood out in one way or another. Don't get the wrong idea: this story never really gets bad, it just isn't great. Alternatingly silly fun and compelling tragedy, Orlando never commits to one tone over the other and both stories suffer for it. The idea of the titular threat could be a great, goofy romp, and an exploration into Bruce's fresh grief should be more moving than it is. The former doesn't work with the gravity of the latter, though, and the latter doesn't get nearly enough focus to actually feel genuine, so the whole issue just feels off. And for a story called “Night of the Monster Men,” this should be an absolute blast when it absolutely, though unfortunately, isn't. Read Full Review

I definitely will continue with the Nightwing title, but this was a weak issue. I have little doubt that the strength of the title will return and build post the Night of the Monster Men event. We are left with a resurgence of Gotham Girl as she hurtles into the next chapter of the event, available in Detective Comics #941. The next step of the Night of the Monster Men arc. Nightwing does get a few moments to shine but it is really a group effort in this book. Nightwing gets a chance to do some batman level detective work and we get to see the scariest monster yet. This crossover still has some room to improve but I'm happy so far. The art could be better.

I think the Monster Men storyline with be a good break from the main series for people, but I also get why there is some hesitancy to the idea of cross-overs. Cross-overs can ruin comics, but I think this will instead help connect points and happenings across the three main Batman comics. It already in it's first two issues set up Cobra's importance in the future, along with Hugo Strange.

The arc continues this issue, and the art is a little weaker than the last on the whole, with no really attention grabbing scenes to call the eye to. The story doesn't progress much this issue, and we don't really have any new revelations or other layers to get our teeth into. That said, the overall premise of the arc is still somewhat interesting - although pulled off in a bit of a lacklustre fashion. The dialogue is fine, but it's not really inspiring or cutting-edge in any way. Overall, I'd say this arc is thoroughly okay. If you are already getting the titles, this certainly isn't bad; but if you weren't before or were not previously considering pulling this arc, then there really isn't much to recommend in these first two issues so far . Hopefully with next week we may see things pick up - but it is looking less likely now. more

Sooo, Nightwing and Batwoman broke their fall on an injection gun, and everyone is okay with that? I also don't get why Nightwing and Spoiler feel that they can't move their Google search to another rooftop as the monster closes in. This issue is just goofy and not in a good way, I just want this Night of the Monster Men thing to be over.
