I'm done with this but I'm glad DC caved in and removed this guy from Gotham. A Batman in New York makes absolutely no sense but I guess DC is just super scared of the potential backlash of cancelling this book because they would be called racists by the usual loonies. Though in all seriousness, as fucked up as real NY is right now, it could definitely use a Batman, even a second rate one lol.

Jan 12, 2022I Am Batman #5 unfortunately falls short of what it could be. This is an issue that could plant a flag that there's a Batman that's not Bruce Wayne and not White. This is a new Batman going off in his own direction and who is an icon for multiple reasons. Instead, the issue feels rushed attempting to wrap up its initial storyline, giving us an important moment between father and son, and setting up the next arc. None of that really gets the amount of time it needs. It's an unusual stumble for Ridley and hopefully one that lasts just this one issue. Read Full Review

Jan 11, 2022While I'm happy that we're moving out of Gotham to hopefully bigger and better things, the way that our progression was handled this issue in dealing with the all-new and improved Magistrate almost feels like a throw-away concept and nothing about the conflict between the new Talos Troopers and Jace Fox felt all that compelling. I really do not understand the criticism this issue is getting from that Bats guy. Is he an Objectivist? It's like he's never read a comic with a complicated hero before... despite being a Batman fan. Anyway, this issue wraps up the first arc of this book, and really, everything from Second Son on. It feels like a definitive closing chapter, which is kind of impressive given just how long this story has been going, and frankly, how all over the place it's been. I hope issue 6 can truly be a fresh start for the character and this series, away from all the baggage of Gotham and Fear State.

This issue isn't perfect, but what strengths it has make it worthwhile to read. Its paced a little fast for my liking, I'd have split the story here into issues 5 and 6 to add more tension but as for the plot itself it continues to be interesting and fifteenth enough from the other bat books to justify its existence. Jace had been out through the ringer but with this issue theres finally a solid reaffirmation of what hrs trying to do here. Lucius fox has not been the most likeable character in this book but he made some good decisions here and he's going to be taking a break from the main cast apparently. I was hoping we could see Jace cross paths with Bruce but its pretty clear they are building to that later. Moving to NY is an more

This was a big step up from the past two issues. I wouldn't go as far as to call it the best issue of the series, but it does give me hope once again for this run. I wholeheartedly agree with what Psycamorean said in their review, in that this feels like a conclusion of an arc that will give way to a fresh start. Hopefully that proves to be true with Issue 6.

Notably, the criminal penalties for hit-and-run murder are the same throughout all of New York State. A Batman with contempt for the law and unwillingness to be accountable for his own crimes, sets an incredibly bad example for our youth. If Lucius has real paternal concern, it would be for his son to first pay for his crimes, before he hypocritically judged others for theirs. Wrong is wrong. Criminals are a cowardly lot. Crime Does Not Pay.
