It's very hard to do a story that fuses both cosmic adventure and personal drama so seamlessly, but Johnson has done an amazing job. It's been a while since John got a great spotlight story that really delves into what makes him unique, and this story will thankfully be continuing in backups after it wraps next issue. The grand tale of the Radiant Host and the Dark Star of the Fenn is reaching its epic conclusion, and with just one issue left before that conclusion, Green Lantern: War Journal #11 seeks to connect all of the book's bigger ideas and events. Mission accomplished on that front, as Phillip Kennedy Johnson dives into the history of the Gods that set all this into motion so long ago and where John Stewart fits into that equation, and while there are some heady concepts at play, the payoff is worth it, with the issue successfully laying out the larger threat, the meaning behind that threat, and the stakes for Stewart and the world at large. This was some great stuff here. So you have the drama of John's mom and her accepting/being open about what is happening, which is emotional. Then you have the epic mind games occurring with John and the Dark Star. Tension is high, we get some insight into how things were and we also get an epic full page of John being the architect and rebuilding. It was a great page just to stare at honestly. So well drawn. Guy and Shepard showing up at the end really did a great job of signalling that the next issue will be the last. Shame that this run is ending, but it looks like it is going to blend in with JA's Green Lantern so all things considered, that isn't a bad way to go out.
