Green Lantern: Futures End #1

Green Lantern: Futures End #1 is a thoroughly enjoyable glimpse into the potential future of Hal Jordan.  There are well written emotional moments which stay consistent with Hal's history but provide new interactions which are both touching and bittersweet.  Balancing out the narrative is a great reminder of why Blackest Night was such a great story filled with new twists that reveal the fates of some familiar faces that haven't been seen in the pages of Green Lantern for quite some time.  With little to find fault with this issue gets five out of five lanterns. Like most titles so far during this Futures End event, this really has no bearing on the Futures End weekly at all, but with that out of the way I do have to say that I loved this issue.  It gave me everything that I didn't know I wanted from a Five Years From Now Green Lantern title.  The Black Lanterns are back, Relic is back and solo Hal kicking ass and taking names is back.  Just a fun one shot that breaks up the usual crossovers that the Lantern titles have been plagued with.  Definitely get your courage up and get this issue. The art here is by Martin Coccolo and Aaron Lopresti with colours by Alex Sinclair, letters by Dave Sharpe and cover by Billy Tan and Alex Sinclair. Martin and Aaron are both among my favourite comics artists and it is nice to see the two of them collaborating on an issue here. Their art styles are complimentary and to be honest, I didn't even notice an art shift between the two! Maybe a little bit, but that's all.And Alex Sinclair, well, Alex is a great colourist and this issue has some of the artist's best work. Read Full Review

While Green Lantern: Futures End #1 doesn't necessarily add a lot to the Futures End weekly title, there is so much to enjoy here that it doesn't overly matter. This is a must read for Green Lantern fans, and any readers considering skipping this month, assuming nothing relevant to the main series will occur should definitely reconsider. Venditti and Tan are throwing all kinds of smoke right now and readers get to reap the rewards of having a Green Lantern team that is on fire. Read Full Review

Green Lantern fans, read this comic. It's not perfect, it's not long, but it's cheap " and it has some great moments with the man who helped raise one of the universe's biggest heroes. It deserves restating that Venditti shows genius in using this single issue for emotional resonance bypassing continuity and canon in order to show the bond between a father and son. The "Futures End" gimmick is set up to craft a bunch of one-shot installments. This one provides a fairly elementary plot that mostly succeeds as a complete story, but it doesn't do much for evolving Hal Jordan. It does more for Relic and Martin, giving them a bit more space, and subsequently a bit more depth. That doesn't keep Venditti from tying Hal Jordan into the mystery of the Source Wall, however, which teases just enough to make this aspect of "Futures End" worthy of revisiting at some point. For the extra dollar, rather than a gimmicky cover, Venditti and crew should have been given a handful more pages, which would come closer to justifying a "Futures End" outing for Green Lantern. Now while I don't judge its contents particularly highly, a massive redeeming factor is the 3D holographic cover. It looks pretty bad-ass and I think if you're a collector, you can't pass up having something one-off like this in your collection. Read Full Review

The issue itself was by in large an average story. The best moments occur between Hal and his father, but Martin mouthing off exposition was a bit jarring. The second half was paced to quickly before the reader could catch their breath. If this one shot showed anything it's that he deserves a shot a drawing some Green Lantern title in the future. This suffers from trying to fit the story in one issue while also cramming exposition into the dialog. A lot is explained but still a lot is left unexplained or is just weird. I wonder if this means we'll see Relic again in the main Green Lantern comic, it was left completely unexplained how he escapes the wall thing.

I was really excited for this issue, since I wanted to know how, in 5 years, the Corps had recovered from the death of the Guardians. But that's never mentioned. How has Hal done as Corps leader in the five years we didn't see for the sake of this jump? Never mentioned. So right off the bat, the things I was most curious about were not mentioned even in passing. Now, in the actual story, the return of the Black Lanterns was really interesting, and led to some really emotional moments regarding Hal and the identity of one of the Black Lanterns. But the ally he has in the battle is Relic. How did Relic escape the Source Wall? Never explained. In a comic that tried to explain a lot, there's still too much that's unexplained for me to have enjo yed this more. The art is really good, with Martin Coccolo managing to mimic Billy Tan's art really well, to the point where I didn't really notice much of a difference. However, I can't recommend this book as a must buy. If you have extra money after going through your pull list, and you're a Green Lantern fan, consider picking it up. If you're not a fan, or you don't have extra money, you can skip this book. more
