Green Lantern #48

Green Lantern #48 really does bring Hal Jordan down to Earth both literally and emotionally. Robert Venditti's script makes Sonar a relevant adversary for the 21st Century and effectively illustrates to difference between dealing with your typical villain and someone with the mindset of a terrorist. Batman's cameo adds some needed fun in an issue that is wrought with emotional turmoil. Four out of five lanterns. Read Full Review

Hal Jordan's on the warpath in this issue, looking for the villain who hurt his nephew and even though we don't get any super villain action really going on here, I found this book really enjoyable for the sheer fact that Hal Jordan actually feels like Hal Jordan did before the weight of the Universe crashed down on his shoulders when the Guardians went all immortal crazy.  The art was fantastic and the direction this story is taking, while kind of slow right now, really gets me excited for what's to come. With the exception of Batman, this issue of Green Lantern was good read, as Venditti lays down more tracks between Hal and Parallax with Emerald Twilight overtones, the next two issues should be entertaining to say the least. Read Full Review

Although this kind of felt like a filler issue, it was a pretty cool Green Lantern story that's somewhat more grounded and earthbound than we may be used to seeing in a book such as this. So take a chance on it and then put your crayons to use. Read Full Review

While this is a perfectly fine issue with a few enjoyable moments, it's not life changing. If you haven't been reading the run, then I wouldn't pick it up. It's a nice read, and I enjoy Gordon's representation, but in the end, Robo-Bats doesn't do enough to warrant Batman fans to pick up this issue. Read Full Review

Green Lantern #48 suffers from being a middle chapter in an arc that isn't taking many chances thus far. Bringing Hal to Earth is certainly not a bad idea, but this issue does little to make the conflict unique to this character or much more than a “find the bad guy and punch him” story. While the storytellers avoid the “heroes smashing heroes” cliche with Hal meeting Batman, the interaction lacks the fire readers are used to when Green Lantern ventures to Gotham. This bookwas still a decent read,even if it suffers from being the middle (and usually least interesting step)of the arc. As Venditti avoids one clich in having two superheroes meet for the first time he creates another problem in that their interactions arent as memorable or as engaging as they could have been. Despite this theres some good efforts here and the book itself, especially with the final few panels, hints at bigger things to come. As Venditti has proven in the past, he can be trusted to deliver when the time calls for the plot to escalate in a meaningful and exciting way. Read Full Review

The final few pages of the comic continue to tease the appearance of a Parallax from a different reality. After discovering the destruction of Oa in this reality, Parallax heads to Earth in search of Hal Jordan. Why his other self is the super-villain's primary target isn't clear but it does continue to tease the eventual meeting between the pair. For fans. Read Full Review

In some ways, this series has a lot going for it at the moment. Hal Jordan's already precarious status quo is given more urgency by the fact that his nephew's life now hangs in the balance. Hal may be dealing with an incompetent terrorist group here. If your end goal is sovereignty from the nation you are within, why are you bombing targets in America rather than the nation you are demanding sovereignty from? Would the goal not be to put pressure on your own nation to grant your province soverignty, not the UN? While the UN has been involved in post-colonial border drawing, they don't exactly go about redrawing the borders of established nations willy nilly. I guess I should be fair and give this another issue, perhaps this Mordova has already held a referendum that the UN refuses to recognize or something. I guess we'll see. It's a bit of a backhanded excuse to vist Batman, of all people, for an information dump. I'm also st ill waiting to see what Paralax will have to do with any of this; it seems to be totally out of left field. more
