This book is as energetic and acrobatic as its title character. If you like the Bat-Family but are reluctant to give Future State a try, this is the book to buy. Read Full Review

Also, tough choice between Yasmine Putri's main cover and the variant by Nicola Scott and Annette Kwok. I generally not a big fan of banners and whatnot, but Putri is one of my favorite cover artists. At the same time, Scott and Kwok put such great detail into Nightwing's Future State armor. Have to go with the variant here. Read Full Review

Future State: Nightwing #1 is a great adventure showing Dick's possible future. It's a fast-paced story that plants seeds for a mystery and also a team-up with the Next Batman in issue #2. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Jim Werner

Andrew Constant gave Nightwing fans and Future State readers an action-packed issue that felt big (Next Batman showing up will do that) and told a quick-moving story that feels like the start of a Future State Bat-Family. I know there probably isn't enough time and space for that, but it felt good seeing it, and I am looking forward to the next issue. Read Full Review

    Geek Dad - Ray Goldfield

    Jan 19, 2021

This issue is maybe a little too one-note gritty at points, but it has a good hook for a solo adventure for Nightwing. The Gotham stories continue to be the most well-thought-out of the line so far. Read Full Review

But Why Tho? - William J. Jackson

    Jan 19, 2021

Future State: Nightwing #1 is a well-crafted introduction into what might be a 'last vigilante standing' tale for Nightwing. It's worth the time and money spent, though just how this will work itself into contemporary continuity if it even will, remains to be seen. Read Full Review

Dick Grayson, Arkham Asylum, Gotham City… all these things go hand-in-hand. We also get to see Nightwing catching up with an old friend, and meeting a brand new one, too. Page 18 of Future State: Nightwing #1 is scorching hot, and it leads to one hell of a cliffhanger. I'm really, really looking forward to issue #2. Read Full Review

Comic Book Revolution - Kevin Lainez

    Jan 24, 2021

Future State: Nightwing #1 continues the trend of the Batman Family titles being some of the best comic books in DC Comics Future State direction. Andrew Constant and Nicola Scott do a great job setting up Nightwing as having the biggest target on his back as the leader of the resistance against the Magistrate's regime. Read Full Review

    Comic Crusaders - M.R. Jafri

    Jan 20, 2021

The action, characters and movement in Nicola Scott's art is always astounding, but the city, characters and costumes here do not feel futuristic in any way. This could easily be an issue of Nightwing in his own run if Batman was missing and replaced a la Azreal. It is nice that the characters in Future State still feel like themselves, but time should change anyone and the fun of a future tale should in part be about contrasts with the characters and world we know. Adding cybernetics to the villains and florescent colors to the city isn't quite enough to differentiate things. Read Full Review

    Jan 19, 2021

With how much time is spent on this otherwise run-of-the-mill confrontation, Constant tips his hand too early in regard to there being something of later narrative importance happening within this sequence, and as a result, the rest of the issue reads as padding until he can give deliver one last switcheroo. There are a number of twists here and ultimately not a substantial enough story to support them. Read Full Review

Final Thoughts: After being on the fence about Future State I'm now fully on board! Being set in the future, it's set up perfectly for new fans as well as long time Nightwing fans. I hope that DC will keep the momentum going through Future State and into the new Infinite Frontier era. This is a super book. I can't recommend it enough! Read Full Review
