Also, tough choice between Yasmine Putri's main cover and the variant by Nicola Scott and Annette Kwok. I generally not a big fan of banners and whatnot, but Putri is one of my favorite cover artists. At the same time, Scott and Kwok put such great detail into Nightwing's Future State armor. Andrew Constant gave Nightwing fans and Future State readers an action-packed issue that felt big (Next Batman showing up will do that) and told a quick-moving story that feels like the start of a Future State Bat-Family. Future State: Nightwing #1 continues the trend of the Batman Family titles being some of the best comic books in DC Comics Future State direction. The action, characters and movement in Nicola Scott's art is always astounding, but the city, characters and costumes here do not feel futuristic in any way. This could easily be an issue of Nightwing in his own run if Batman was missing and replaced a la Azreal. It is nice that the characters in Future State still feel like themselves, but time should change anyone and the fun of a future tale should in part be about contrasts with the characters and world we know. Adding cybernetics to the villains and florescent colors to the city isn't quite enough to differentiate things. Read Full Review

With how much time is spent on this otherwise run-of-the-mill confrontation, Constant tips his hand too early in regard to there being something of later narrative importance happening within this sequence, and as a result, the rest of the issue reads as padding until he can give deliver one last switcheroo. Final Thoughts: After being on the fence about Future State I'm now fully on board! Being set in the future, it's set up perfectly for new fans as well as long time Nightwing fans. I hope that DC will keep the momentum going through Future State and into the new Infinite Frontier era. This is a super book. I can't recommend it enough! Read Full Review

Would I feel the same way about Future State Nightwing if there hadn't been an awful storyline before it? I don't know, but it was no less than great to finally see Dick Grayson in action again without the baggage and mishandling of the last 2+ years. Constant showcases what makes Dick so competent. His Dick is permitted to be smart and a leader. And that's about all fans have been wanting to see after so long. Scott's art is as always nice to look at, and she knows how to tell a story and showcase fluid motion. The only design I don't enjoy is Dick's costume. The chin strap and the shoulder armor makes him look scrunched up. This Issue sets up a neat dynamic between not only Batman and Nightwing but also Nightwing and the over-all r esistance. And I hope we get to see a little more of those relationships in #2. more

The first Future State comic worth reading as a stand alone. Glad to see Dick Grayson standing on this own after so long, though its a shame everything else has to suffer to make it so.

Andrew Constant makes good use of Magistrate controlled Gotham City, and portrays the city as a hopeless, totalitarian hellhole where every move you make is being monitored and recorded by fascist overlords. It's a haunting dystopia, certainly explored better than what we've seen in Dark Detective, Harley Quinn and even this week's Catwoman (which is an awesome comic, don't get me wrong, it's just it doesn't delve too deep into this world's mythos and structures of oppressive power). You actually feel like Nightwing is in constant danger and there are consequences to his actions - I like that, a lot in fact. If there's something I dislike, that'd be completely bad, hateful and irredeemable fascist villains, who are so generic and forgett able, they put some 90's cartoon baddies to shame. Now, granted, it's not just this comic's problem, same thing appeals to every title set in Gotham City, but in this case it's more noticeable because we actually get a scene or two seen through their eyes. That's a waste, but it doesn't make me feel this comic suffers because of it a lot. After all, what matters in a Nightwing comic is Nightwing, and Nightwing's arc is really solid. more

Pretty solid story with some nice art. I loved the splash page with Nightwing back-flipping above near-future Gotham. I wasn't sure about the meeting with the new Batman. I preferred Dick on his own.

Nightwing picks up the beat, which is good but that unnecessary nude of Dick that they tend to obsessively do bores already a little wth?. The only thing I hate is the meeting with the new Batman and this is only to raise the new Batman anticipating the rejection of some fans, it is a formula that DC has as he cannot place him with Bruce for logical reasons he will partner with Nightwing due to his fame .

Artwork was well done but the story was lacking. I find it hard to believe that the Next Batman could best Dick Grayson in hand to hand combat. Over all the book isn't as bad as the other Future State books but it isn't good either. So yet again, save your money.

Exactly, they are putting this new Batman as better than the original in a desperate way when they have not even shaped his story, everything is like magic for this Batman, far from pleasing it is hateful, good at least for me.
