Detective Comics is having an incredible run, right now. The book has consistent character development, thrilling writing and beautiful art. Detective Comics continues to be a fantastic team book and isnt afraid to put the spotlight on its cast of characters who never feel second rate, even when compared to Batman himself. Definitely a series fans of Batman should be reading, but this is equally accessible to those still cutting their teeth on the post-Rebirth continuity. Read Full Review

This issue really belongs to Cassandra, and Tynion has proven that she can still carry a story largely by herself. Marcio Takara's art is still rougher than it needs to be; which is frustrating because he's quite capable of delivering more finished looking pages than he has here. Read Full Review

While the story does have Cassandra defeating throngs of ninjas, half the action occurs off-page while the rest is depicted in minuscule panels that don't do Cassandra's frenetic and acrobatic style any justice. The theme is also a little too simplistic for my liking. That's not to say the message of the theme isn't worthwhile, just that the execution felt a little heavy-handed. Read Full Review

While there was some cool action sequences in this issue, it still didn't quite hit a home run for me. I did enjoy the Orphan stuff that happened, but right now it just feels like maybe there's too many cooks in the kitchen for this book. Another problem with it, for a Batman book we sure are missing out on a lot of Batman action. I will also say that I was a little dissapointed to find out Ulysses is taking the evil path. I mean, I knew he wasn't a great guy, but in this issue we've definitely established him to be a total bad guy. So that's too bad. Overall, it's a fun read and a decent Batman story. This issue is all about Cassandra Cain and while that sounds great, some spotty art and an odd narrative device made it fall a bit flat.  The big battle never happens and is left for the finale next issue and while I am looking forward to that, this whole arc is starting to drag. Read Full Review

I wish Christine had been in a few earlier issues, but I liked how she was able to help Cass realize that she's not broken just because she doesn't want to live up to the deadly, evil legacy of her parents. This was a big turning point for Cass, since it's the first time she really believes that not only can shae be good, but that being that way doesn't make her worthless. Seeing her struggle with that over the course of this arc was great to see, and it pays off here. The fights scenes of Cass just wrecking house are the icing here. Can't wait to see the final showdown next issue, including what kind of move the Colony's going to play, since they're a bit of a wildcard right now.

UGH!!! we have to wait another two weeks for the battle we've all been waiting for? and it won't likely be what I was hoping for (1:1 Cassandra vs Shiva)? Sigh. This has got to be the worst 9 rating of all time. Such disappointment! But seeing her slaughter those assassins by the dozen was pretty good :) I have no idea how "the twist" happens at the end. Sadly, it seems we are building up to have next issue be more about the colony crap than about Cassandra vs Shiva. Sigh.

This arc has been one of the more boring and slow arcs for me. I appreciate the transformation they are trying to do with Orphan, but I feel that it could have been done slightly quicker. I still think Detective is a quality comic, but I just hope the next arc picks up the pace.

Essentially this issue is a your typical motivational pep talk for Cassandra. While well written and builds tension for what we can assume will be a massive knock down slug fest in the next issue. It doesn't really add anything new to the arc. I don't know what has happened with the art the last two books but I'm not a fan at all. Especially didn't like the two page splash that made you read the book sideways. In my opinion that just wasn't needed and took me out of the story. Also where was the epic action sequence the solicit advertised!? Overall even with my issues with the art and not really moving the arc forward and feeling like a bit of a filler issue it's written well and does end with a predictable but thrilling launching point in to the next issue. more

The weakest arc in this run takes a turn for the better with DETECTIVE COMICS #955. A spotlight on Orphan and some nice artwork from Marcio Takara make for a really good issue. SCORE: 7.8

One of the noticeably weaker issues of the arc. The prose Tynion uses throughout this was very Snyder-esque but not as strong. The constant artist changes, though understandable, effect the flow of the story. This is a book that definitely reads better in trade so I think that is how I'll continue this series.
