Detective Comics #1069

Detective Comics #1069 is an exceptional chapter in Ram V's run on the series. The operatic themes are still present, especially in the opening, while there is an interesting commentary on Gotham, Batman, and more throughout. Add in the incredibly well-done first chapter in a three-part backup story, and you have an all-time great issue of Detective Comics. ‘Detective Comics' #1069 continues to really delve deeply into the very soul of Batman, the city of Gotham, and the various characters that populate this world in the face of a new outside threat that keeps barrelling down on them all with increased pressure. Seriously: just get rid of Batman in Detective Comics. Gotham City is a lot more interesting. Two-Face. Commissioner Montoya. Jim and Barbara Gordon. Theyre all a lot more interesting than Bruce...and hes got more than enough titles already. Ram V shows great potential for the city to exist on its own without Batman. There certainly is a hell of a lot going on without him. Montoya and Gordon would be more than enough to hold down the title of Detective Comics. Ram V has found a hell of a lot of life inhabiting the corners of Batmans world. It would be nice to see a single title linger there in the corners of the panels for an extended period of time. Ram V might be one of the few writers who can manage to infuse a sense of urgency and uncertainty into stories featuring the world's top superhero. I was also very happy to see the return of Shoes, a character Ram introduced in Catwomanand whose secret identity promises to be a major part of upcoming DCU storylines. Read Full Review

The emphasis on discovery and refocusinginfused with more characters becoming involvedmakes this issue an enjoyable read after an epic blow out from last months issue. Furthermore, the back up story is well done in its narrative around Mr. Freeze. Fans of this run will definitely enjoy this issue as it sets the stage for what is coming next. Read Full Review

Ram V's first act in his Gotham Nocturne adds the supporting instrumentals of the Batfamily to the opera of Batman vs the Orghams, and those voices definitely raise the story quite nicely. Read Full Review

Detective Comics #1069 is another slow, complex, ponderous entry in an arc that appears to need direction or sense of momentum toward an eventual goal. The art is spot-on for a dark, grim thriller, but the glacial pacing and overwritten text need to come together in a story that will hold your interest. Read Full Review

This issue is another example of good character work. Batman's relationship with Jim Gordon, and the various other figures highlighted through this run gain depth through the issue. However, while Ram V does an excellent job building his characters and their interactions, the narrative feels like it's really struggling to keep up its momentum. While I'm really enjoying this series, and think it'll work well in a trade format I would also like to see it pick up the pace a little more in upcoming issues. Read Full Review

One of my favorite writers handling one of my favorite books and the results are just as I hoped brilliant. Ram v's run has been so innovative and interesting to me. His style fits detective so well resulting in a storyline I absolutely love. I think Jim Gordon's comments to the "man behind the mask will have significant relevance down the line and has me speculating about what may come.

This run has been a good to great slow burn. And I have enjoyed every issue so far. I feel the 10 ranking are a tad high. As it's not the Long Halloween or anything. But it's forsure the best detective has been since Tomasi was in the book.

Lots of cool little stuff going on in this issue and it read a little choppy because of it. The scene with Batman and Gordon was fantastically done and it was really exciting to see a hint of the Question in Montoya's desk. Ram and Spurrier are also writing the most interesting take on Two Face in years and years and I wish the book had given some of these scenes a little more time to breathe.

You're not the only one. I enjoyed last issue pretty well, but this one was a big yawner. If Ram V would stop wasting our time with this same dull cliche we could get to the point and finally see some real action.

This seems to be an uphill, downhill ride. Last issue was the best yet of this run, but this one was so boring I wished every page I'd turn to would be the last. This has to be the worst issue from this run so far. But if you disagree with me you'll be glad to know next issue will be my last for now (I already have a copy ordered or I'd stop with this one). I'll be leaving Detective until either this tiring story is finally over or Ram V's run ends. Whichever comes first. Anyhoo, I have to give Reis credit. His work's as good as always. I just wish we had a little more action and a bit less of the same endless boring stuff most issues of this run have been filled with. It is good to see Gordon helping Batman again. I wonder if Ram V is try ing to build up to his being reinstated as Commissioner once more. I've seen him lose his job for extended periods several times and it gets tiring. As for the Ten-Eyed man, I expected better when I saw him at the end of last issue. And Arzen needs to ditch the spit curl. The only person I ever see that work for is Superman, and he ain't no Superman. I've come to think of V's run on Detective as if Batman was a show on the CW. Like with those shows I grow weary of this unending story full of uninteresting new characters and little Detective work in any of the plots. Oh, well. Maybe one day I'll check out the remaining 28 or so issues of this saga, long after it's over of course. But for now I think I'll take a break and save some money. more
