The opening to this issue has a curious bit that takes place “somewhere hidden” that has a number of characters that are essentially just staying separate from all the events going on. With L-Ron involved, we get the nod that they're all either robots, cyborgs, or those enhanced heavily through tech that should make for a good twist soon. Knowing that some of the Metal Men are still alive will always make me happy. Anyway, the bulk of the book is just pure action, and it leans into it hard and with consequences. Again, that's the best part of these alternate timeline books in that they're able to just follow through on tough stories with “realistic” deaths and changes. Darkseid's arrival is a game-changer in a big way, and I like how it unfolds, especially now that he believes what he's after here is no longer here and the planet and its people have no value to him. However, the fact that the plot has become an afterthought, the characterization absurd, and the vampires continue to remain hair-tearingly inconsistent, means it's highly unlikely all of this will come together satisfactorily. While the addition of these cosmic figures quickly strips away much of the horror vibe of this comic and brings it closer to the tone of the later issues of DCeased, it also takes out a good deal of the tension but the cliffhanger reveals what's going on with one of the biggest dangling plot threads of the series. SPOILERS AHEAD I was afraid this would get too much "event-itis" so to speak, where the action completely overrides the story, but I have to say, I think this worked really well. Better than many actual events honestly. The vampires finally have to face a threat themselves and Darkseid first impression is very, very strong. This three-way fight (though obviously both vampires and humans will have to cooperate, because their objective is the same: save their planet) shows a lot of promise. The caos is great to see, and we see both factions start figuring out their situation. And the characters being given little moments work very well. Green Arrow figuring out a plan to retreat. Mary and Kara saving them. Even WW, as evil as she is, putting out a good fight against Darkseid. The backup was both creepy and macabre. more

I have no idea why this series is still going on. Though this issue has plenty of action, the story doesn't move forward at all. The artwork continues to be uninspired. There are several panels that I can't even tell what's going on. They are going to drag this out for 5 more issues just to have 12 issues. I thought this was ending at issue 8.
