Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #6

Sadly, the ending of this series feels improvisational. The entire first half of the series follows Jar Vandar and his bounty hunters trying to hunt Alec down. However, the goalpost shifts to Alec needing to bring the world back by defeating Viktor, but the details keep changing. I never tire of TIRSO's stylized artwork, but a lot of the conflict develops fairly inorganically. Still, a lot of the world remains impressive, even if this only feels like part one of a drawn out larger story. Perhaps, Jay Kristoff hopes to continue the adventures of Alec, Deathstroke, and his band of allies in another follow-up. Overall, the redemption story doesn't quite land if you keep changing the terms of the redemption, but it certainly looks good. Read Full Review

Okay, SO...I liked some things about this finale, and I disliked others. First, what I liked: I'm glad Bruce came back. I had mentioned in an earlier review that I thought it was dumb how abruptly Bruce peaced out, but that it would be made better if he ends up coming back, and he did, so yay. Mr. Freeze is a Batman villain so it wouldn't be right for the two of them to not face off. I also liked how Viktor froze an entire CITY just to keep Nora alive. For me, that elevated the Mr. Freeze origin story, taking both his love for Nora and his obsession with keeping her alive to new depths. Really cool. And finally, I REALLY loved the resolution to the conflict. Alec saving Nora's life to stop Freeze instead of him just getting beaten in a figh t was a MUCH better ending and I almost shed a tear when they were reunited. Now, the things I disliked: Unfortunately, the dialogue was mostly atrocious. Corny one-liners, jokes that didn't land, cringeworthy battle-banter...it was just bad. Worst of the series. Secondly, according to Norse mythology, draugrs are undead creatures who were deceased but then later reanimated. So why did Viktor's spell turn still living people (including Slade's sons) into draugrs even though they didn't die first? And if the spell did that to Slade's sons, why didn't it do the same thing to Slade and Adeline, who were right there with them? It's nonsensical. Taylor could've made it work, but the way he wrote it is both contrary to mythology and it doesn't make sense within the story itself. This was a serviceable tale. I appreciated that Taylor didn't cram this one so full of DC characters that he ran out of time to properly tie up the plot threads. Focusing on a small group of characters worked in his favor this time. I'm into the idea of expanding the DKoS universe into other medieval genres, but I worry Taylor won't know when to let it die and it will go on far too long and get way too convoluted. But for now, this was a decent mini. more
