Catwoman #74

Distant Tokyo background aside, Grnbekk and company are doing a good job of telling a solid story that feels like it holds some potential impact for Selina as things move forward for her. Its been a fun exploration with Grnbekk so far. Itll be interesting to see quite where she moves with the narrative as it progresses forward in a largely enjoyable series of conflicts. Selina is an interesting character. Nt many authors have been able to live-up to her potential. Grnbekk seems to understand what makes a good tumble through the pages with Selina. Read Full Review

Despite its action-heavy theme, this is a pretty slow-burn run that is holding a lot of its mystery tight to its chest, so it may read better in trade. Read Full Review

Catwoman #74 is an extremely necessary step forward for the run as Selina faces a few challenges, and the overall plot gets addressed for the first time in a long time. Maybe I'm being a bit more lenient because the comic actually tries to tell a story in this issue, but there is a feeling that everything is coming together for a finale, with multiple established elements starting to pop back up. I will persevere with this title beyond Catwoman #74 simply because of my love of the character, however there is a lot of work that needs to happen for this seasoned Catwoman reader to feel happy with the story's direction. Read Full Review

'Catwoman' #74 is, in a word, boring. The story fails to emotionally involve Selena in any of it's convoluted plot beats and the end result is an issue that fails to make a case for its existence. It's difficult to imagine a scenario where this arc provides any kind of satisfying conclusion given how little Selena seems to care about what's been happening, but the issue is at least nice to look at. This run by Torunn Gronbekk attempts to give Catwoman a mysterious past that’s never been explored. Gronbekk does it by placing the story in a wholly different genre than what is usually associated with Catwoman. This isn’t a street urchin learning how to survive on her own, this is firmly in the realm of espionage with a distinctly European flavor. I’ve compared it to Modesty Blaise or Diabolik previously, and it’s hard not to recapitulate that comparison. For as un-Catwoman-like it can seem, it IS working. Perhaps, when Gronbekk is done, this chapter in Selina’s life will fit seamlessly into the bigger picture. Right now it’s a fun enjoyable ride and it’s hard not to like.

This run is Tom king style. Make a story. Then make the character you’re writing fit the story. Nothing about this is Selina. But it’s also not a bad story. Just slow.

This story doesn't even feel like a Catwoman book. It feels like Torunn had a story and just threw Catwoman into it. Her whole plan was to get the key, though I've forgetten why since this story has been drug out as long as it has. The fight scene is awful. It should have been over in a single panel. When he clocked her in the head with the baseball bat (or a cricket bat) she would have been out. There is not padding in that mask, like in Batman's. Then he hits her again in the forearm, which would have broken her bones. Then he punches her in the face, a man twice her strength. It was completely ludicrous. Sadly, this is my last issue. I find this run completely unreadable. My LCS told me they only order 2 per month and with me dropping it , they will only be ordering one. That tells you something.
