Batman Beyond #4

Why is this only six issues? I think this would be a superb on-going series, especially with Hush as a main villain. I had my doubts originally about whether this television series would transfer over to comics a decade later, but all my doubts have been blasted out of the water. I desperately want a worthy successor to Batman Beyond the show. I had hoped that this series was going to be that, but the issue seems to have all but cemented the miniseries as a disappointment. I suppose its still possible that Beechen could turn the plot around and make it something at least salvageable, but this issue is making me think that he wont be able to. There is still hope with the announcement of a new Batman Beyond ongoing, but I can only hope that it will not only not be in continuity with this miniseries, but that there will be a new creative team altogether. Batman Beyond #4 has one of the strangest most confusing endings of any book I've read this year - and I've been reading most of Grant Morrison's stuff. Is the villain really Dick Grayson, a clone, Jason Todd, Clayface? The cover teases the villain revealed, and in a sense he is, but with art varying from artist to artist the revealed character could be anyone. Sadly, this "big reveal" hurts the issue for me, and Batman Beyond #4 only earns 2.5 out of 5 Stars. Read Full Review

And then there's the final panel… Yeah. Um, yeah. I won't ruin for it for in case you plan to pick this one up, but lets just say the final panel flushes the promise of the previous pages right down the toilet. Sigh. I doesn't work, whether it's real or simply yet another twist (this comic has more than a Shyamalan marathon). We'll have to see if the series can rebound, but I have my doubts. Read Full Review

This story went off the rails in this issue. Bruce Wayne is painted as incompetent both in his younger days as Batman and as Terry's mentor and is nothing like Batman or his Beyond appearances prior to this series. The Hush mystery/Dick Grayson debacle is just the final straw. It'll take some serious work to redeem this series after this issue with only two issues left. Read Full Review

Better than the last issue. The paneling was great, the pace was smooth. I like getting Terry talking to Dick but it didn't feel like enough. These are two of my favorite Bat-Family characters and I won't be happy unless I see a lot more of them interacting. It does suffer from just showing who Hush is instead of any sort of detection from Terry, Bruce or the reader. The art is stronger, cleaner lines though the continuity of Catwoman's helmet from this to last issue is different and that bothers my brain a bit. With two issues left I really don't know what they have left to show.
