Batman and the Outsiders #13

For all of the frequent issues of imbalance in storytelling that Batman and the Outsiders suffers, this week's issue #13 is an issue that finds itself firmly set on stable ground with a chapter that offers up not only some explanation as to what's next for the team now that Ra's diabolical plan has been revealed, but delivers on some of the doubts and concerns that have been planted irregularly through the series thus far. This issue is a little slow, but I welcome the change of pace. It's setting the tome for the war to come. The character moments, guest star and terrific artwork all elevate the book. If people want to see some great comic-book storytelling, this would be a fine issue to hand them. Read Full Review

In an issue that allows the Outsiders to breathe, they regroup and gear up for the next inevitable showdown with Ra's Al Ghul as they also work out some of their more personal conflicts. Read Full Review

Melnikov offers some great visuals throughout this issue. The style is impressive and has a beautiful, animated quality to it. The backgrounds are gorgeously detailed and there are some impressive panels throughout. Read Full Review

Bryan Hill's initial storyline started off somewhat slowly, but it's moving ahead full steam now. I look forward to seeing Batman and the Outsiders climactic clash with Ra's Al Ghul as Hill's story moves closer to its conclusion. Read Full Review

Katana's gamble offers one example of how desperate the Outsiders have become. Another comes from Batman himself, who offers to boost Black Lightning‘s powers in order to fight the alien tech which threatens the world. But, at what cost? Read Full Review

The issue doesn't offer much up in the way of plot progression, but it does touch on the characters and their mindset, which is appreciated. Hill is also clearly laying down more foundation which will pay off in a future issue " we've come to not only expect this from him, but trust him in delivering as well. Batman and the Outsiders #13 lacks the forward momentum and fun I need from this series.  We do get some big moments, but they are presented in ways that make them less exciting than they should be.  The book looks good, and readers of the series know what to expect by now.  I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Batman and the Outsiders #13 is largely an exercise in table setting but features wonderful artifacts and an intriguing story hook. Now that the stage and story are set, hopefully, the next issue will feature more of the character moments and action sequences that make the series a standout. Read Full Review

I don't know why I continue to read this book. I mean, it has potential, but there's so many diversions and the dialogue can be a chore with certain characters. Katana and Shiva, especially. I'll be dropping this soon if it doesn't have an uptick in quality.
