Once again, Action Comics #1037 lives up to its name with tons of action, sci-fi supervillains, and Superman intrigue. There are also political elements at work here, showing how this isn't a simple fistfight, but a war that spans planets. The stakes have raised this issue with the battle between Superman and the Authority against Mongul and his Lieutenants, not to mention a fun backup featuring everybody's favorite Martian. The art is great throughout and I find myself excited to read the next issue...... and a little worried. This is what I totally needed though to get me back on the Action Comics trolley. Action Comics #1037 delivers on giving readers the big fight between Superman and the new Mongul. The fight itself is well-paced with solid dialogue by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, while the art by Miguel Mendonca and colors by Adriano Lucas make this a fun and dynamic comic book. The biggest problem is the predictability of the fight and how it all ends. But now that the series is going full-throttle with the Warworld Saga, readers will be getting more from this new Mongul storyline. Read Full Review

This latest seeming death of Superman feels like such a depressing turn for a character who was enjoying a massive creative renaissance until Brian Micheal Bendis systemically tore down so much of what made the character great since Rebirth. Action Comics #1037 is a mixed bag. The best parts don't get the focus, and the Martian Manhunter second feature has a clearer direction even if everything isn't obvious at the start. However, Miguel Mendonca and Adriana Melo combine for a strong artistic outing across both stories. Once again Julian Totino Tedesco provides an exceptional variant cover- what a story that would be! Perhaps, once we get past this second "death of Superman" Johnson can explore the interesting concepts he's introduced. Read Full Review

The Authority? Better Suicide Squad. Outstanding issue! Mongul shows why he's a big bad menace for Superman.

This is really the best Superman run in years, no doubt. The story is just epic and great, and PKJ is twisting everything in ways we can't even imagine. I mean, we already knew previously that Superman would be made a powerless slave in WarWorld, but his entire team losing that way? And the death of certain character in that way? Absolutely not expecting that. I'm very curious to know the role The Authority will take in this WarWorld Saga. About the art, Mendonça is crushing it, his art is very beautiful.

Everything was great, but the pacing was a bit off. Interested to see how long our heroes stay down for the count. Mongul's plan was too perfect, and Supes + Authority got got. Officially on the Future State path; lets see how we move on from here.

This is a good issue, but it didn't hit as hard as the last one. Even though, by any measure, it had bigger moments in it. Also, petty drama, Merlyn is legitimately stupid. Like, sure that could be assessed through much of what he's said, but like... oh my god, his review here is... very telling. That one should go on the subreddit.

I must say Johnson has suddenly put a adrenaline rush into Action Comics. He may be able to write an interesting Action adventure once in a while after all. Maybe some of us are being too hard on this title because we're still not over all the damage Bendis did and that his legacy is still doing, like what's happening back on Earth. But I have to give this issue credit for helping me forget that for a change. I was about to drop Action but may stick with it a couple more issues, maybe even stick out the rest of this Warworld saga (which will probably take all year). While I can't give a 10 or even a 9 to this issue, it deserves an honest review. While I'm not on the edge of my seat like the death or Return almost 30 years ago, and I'm s till not considering this story even in the same league as them, I have to say this issue was Johnson's best issue yet. more

Yeah, I didn't enjoy this, sorry. The logic of it just isn't there. The council dude who argues against intervention just doesn't make sense. I get it, he was trying to delay offering help to Supes so he doesn't save the Phaelosians he was afraid of but his reasoning is flawed. I mean, whether they intervene in conjunction with Superman or after he was supposed to liberate Warworld, according to his logic, they would have to receive refugees either way, it makes no difference when they helped. And I find hard to believe that the whole UP armada wouldn't have ticked the scale against Warworld. So yeah, it makes zero sense. Other than that, the fights were boring, a lot of the dialogue was weird and I really missed Sampere on art. The backup is not very good, either, Shawn Aldridge is not a good writer, though I like that Martian Manhunter is in the spotlight. Tldr, PKJ should do better. more

Edgelord story telling continues. Two issues in and I'm already sick of this story. 22 pages of the actual story followed by 15 pages for 2 stories I never asked to read. Save your money kids.
