Action Comics #1034

The build up of intensity in the two stories in Action Comics #1034 promises to spill over"soon! Superman's bold move suggests so much more than discussed above. This feels like a truly important moment in the life of the Man of Steel and his relationship with the people of Earth and his friends in the Justice League (Aquaman was not happy at all!) The backup story about the Midnighter is pretty strong too. It is written by W. Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan and drawn by Michael Avon Oeming. There is a big reveal in the story and it leads to the next forthcoming chapter. Read Full Review

"Warworld Rising" Part 5 pushes Superman and his allies to the limit as the echoes of Warworlds actions hit both at home in the Fortress of Solitude and on the sea. Meanwhile, Midnighter brings the duo of Midnighter and Mr. Miracle into direct conflict with Trojans forces as we gear up for the final confrontation between man, machine, and man-machine. With both stories in their penultimate chapters, Action Comics #1034 could easily have been an awkward, transitional issue; instead it is a delight from front to back, with the promise of even more to come. The action in Action Comics #1034 finally ramps back up. There are exciting new developments finally hitting the Warworld storyline. There are a few twists here, some more predictable than others. The comic follows though on this stern and active depiction of Superman. The art looks great and nails down the action in this comic. Readers who enjoyed the Midnighter back-up will have more to enjoy. Overall, the issue builds up momentum that will carry over into the next issue for sure. Read Full Review

Action Comics #1034 does some great stuff. The main story is action-packed and builds the plot up even more. Johnson has shown that hes great at this sort of thing, dropping great stories in every issue. Duce steps up with the fill-in issue, keeping the art at the high level it had previously been, and the backup team is firing on all cylinders. While the Superman section of Action Comics remains pretty strong, that Midnighter backup does little besides up the price of the book and I can't wait for it to be over. With that, I'm still hoping that the Superman section can find better pacing than it has here because the way it splits up what story it wants to tell just leaves both sections feeling weaker than they should, which sucks because separately they both seem like really important stories that I wish we could concentrate on.   Read Full Review

Why do governments always have to be portrayed as being so dumb and trigger happy in comics? Sure I felt the tension but it's like nobody even bothers with diplomatics. Hence why Superman has to step in. But it doesn't seem like the best option, just the only one that could prevent a war. Tension only rises when people feel like they don't have a choice. Gotta say, I like the back-up's depiction of Shilo a bit more than the solo series. Here he has a bit more personality, especially when acting as a sanity foil to Midnighter. Leaves me wondering what going to happen after the ending.

This was a better issue. I really like the tenseness of the stuff with the super-family and Atlantis. I would read a comic like that every week. The stuff at the Fortress of Solitude is way less interesting. It just doesn't match that feeling I want from this title. The backup is... crazy, and I'm glad it's almost over.

This was a good story, AC was constantly good later but I don't like where this is heading. Superman's behavior here, while justified by how tense he's been after the last issues, leads to his alliance with the Authority and, in conclusion, to Jon being Superman. I really, really don't like the way DC chooses to sneak all the 5G ideas down our throat. The Flash is the only one who isn't replaced so far. I would have preferred Sampere on art but overall I liked the story and how it was written. I just don't like the direction and the way it's done.

It seems the longer this drags on, the less interested I get. Once things with Warworld are finished I'm done with Superman altogether until DC gets it together and realizes what a stupid mistake they're making, provided they ever even will. Thao-La is such an uninteresting character, I just don't care about what happens with her. I know they think she's going to be the next big superstar, but strongly disagree. I have no intention of following whatever happens to her beyond this point. that's how boring she is. Unless you're a die-hard fan who can't miss an issue for the sake of a complete collection then you're better off saving $4. When I read this stuff I know I wish I had.
