That I loved a franchise in my younger days does not mean a reboots creators understand how to grow a series alongside me. Alright. So I clearly have a lot of nostalgia for the Power Rangers. But was it good? I think so. This isn't a groundbreaking comic, but it certainly is fun on every page. It will hit all the right notes for fans of the series and might make you want to fire up the episodes for a rewatch. If Mighty Morphin Power Rangers shows us nothing else, it's that there's room for superhero stories that aren't bogged down with being too dark or gritty. At its heart, the story of the Power Rangers"in both the television series and in this comic book"is one of teamwork and hope. With Higgins framing the series' starting point with Tommy looking to earn redemption and acceptance from when he was under Rita's thrall, those themes become all too important. Higgins sets the series up nicely to start in March in the final pages of this zero issue, revealing a monster that's rumored to be the main villain of the reboot film. To round it off, this is a series I've been waiting for without knowing it–for years. It gives me a mature, complex version of a universe I fell in love with as a child and updates it. I really liked this look at what we can expect from Kyle Higgins' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  The story is a clever little update that is subtle in it's changes because it is obvious how much Higgins knows and enjoys the source material.  While I am not a Power Rangers scholar, I did notice enough to say that this book isn't exactly new user friendly.  Sure, if you are looking for a fun teenaged superhero book, you can do a whole lot worse, but this is obviously set up for fans of the franchise first and foremost.   Read Full Review

While the sheer number of stories makes this an issue better suited to its Zero issue status than a full debut, each one has something charming, different, and honest to say about the Power Rangers brand. With more space in future installments, the few significant flaws, such as tepid characterization and rushed fights, seem destined to give way to a series uniquely able to answer the range and passion that MMPR has inspired over the years. Overall, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #0 is a fantastic tribute to the series that ignited a phenomenon, able to honor what came before while updating it for the modern day. The Power Rangers are drawn in full out action poses as the Putties attack. The Megazord and Dragonzord battle Goldar it looks as if evil is out numbered today. Nice setup for the battle to come. Read Full Review

There are three stories here: the main story, a back up story featuring the not so dynamic duo of Bulk and Skull, and the short story featured in the San Diego Comic Con book. Their #0 issue finds a good balance between old school nostalgia and a more modernized take, with a solid new mystery developing alongside a familiar story. If you are a Power Rangers superfan that is on the fence about this title, buy this book. If you have nostalgic memories of this series and want to relive them, buy this book. If you're looking for something akin to IDW's TMNT that takes the franchise in bold new directions while skirting the familiar, you probably want to wait for a few more issues to come out to avoid disappointment. I would've said the same thing about IDW's TMNT early in the run, though, so take it with a grain of salt. I know I am. I feel like it could score higher for a diehard fan, but I'm trying to step back and give my honest opinion of the writing not colored by my love for the franchise and also to let new reader know what to expect. However for me the random starting point is a big question mark and while the writing isn't bad, it seems to hearken back to the cheesy tone of the show " which I suppose for some is what they will want, I won't bother really reading it if it does that though, because I already have that in the old show and could just go rewatch it if I wanted that. I would hope that they could keep the youthful positivity and lighter tone and such and not go all dark, but it would have been nice to have more real sounding dialogues and conversations and such. It's real bittersweet to see Trini in the comic, given that the actress died in a car accident many years ago. Also, was not really interested in the last two short-stories, I could do without them.

This is a book that really hits home for me. I have a lot of history with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and I didn’t even realize for YEARS after watching the show that it was an adaptation of a Japanese show where the American version just chopped out all the kaiju and giant robot fights and spliced in their own, ridiculous, version of Saved By The Bell- except the Bayside High kids fight super villains instead of boredom and west coast privilege. This is a really nice way to jump into Power Rangers, because it gives a pretty soft reboot to the story- picking up after (assuming) the FIVE PART EVENT in the first season of Power Rangers where Tommy, the Green Ranger, has his evil spell broken and is no longer the pawn of Rita Repulsa a nd joins forces with the Power Rangers themselves. There is also a backup story by Steve Orlando, who wrote this story surprisingly well and Mairghread Scott, who did a good job writing from the point of view of Goldar, the big knight-wolf-flying monkey creature who is Rita’s right hand man (dog, creature?). I really liked this story, and I am looking forward to the number one issue. I have been a big Power Rangers fan since I was young, collecting figures, having the giant transforming Megazord for myself. Then, this year for Christmas my brother bought my 3 year old a screen replica Mega Morpher with lights and sounds, and the main five rangers interchangeable coins, I even bought him a pair of imaginext figures- the pink and green rangers. So we started to watch the TV show together, and he is as hooked as I was: Its great. And since im on board for the show and comic book, I wont do what my mom did to me when I was a kid- she watched like 2 minutes of the show and was taken aback by its vapid lack of story and flashy, quick cut fight scenes and asked me why I even liked this and I quote “stupid crap”? to which, the very fragile young Ryan reacted with tears and fled.
