Absolute Batman (2024) #1
Dec 9, 2024 |
Absolute Batman is a bold reimagining of the Batman mythos. Since the Dark Knight has always dwelled in the shadows, this Absolute universe is a perfect fit. Scott Snyder masterfully reworks the mythology in intriguing ways, while Nick Dragotta's energetic art practically leaps off the page. |

The second issue of Absolute Batman continues the bold trajectory of the first, expanding upon the opening story arc. Snyder's writing demonstrates a deep understanding of Batman and a unique ability to reimagine the character. Dragotta's art continues to delight the eye. |

Absolute Batman (2024) #4
Mar 20, 2025 |
Absolute Batman #4 provides a thoughtful exploration of the reinterpreted Bruce Wayne's psychological journey as he develops into Batman. Gabriel Walta's art shift requires some adjustment, but once acclimated, the story and art unfold into a solid narrative. This issue is yet another strong entry in an already impressive series. |

Absolute Green Lantern (2025) #1
Apr 2, 2025 |
While the Absolute line garners critical and fan acclaim, I believe its focus on dark reimaginings of DC's vibrant heroes squanders significant creative talent. The Absolute Batman series succeeds because the character inherently lends itself to darker narratives. This Absolute Green Lantern iteration is unsuccessful. The characterizations of the main characters feel significantly misaligned. I strongly dislike the blending of Green Lantern mythology with horror. I'm finished with this series. |

Bitter Root (2018): The Next Movement #1
Mar 28, 2025 |
Fiction can ignite a sense of adventure and prompt reflection on real-life struggles. Bitter Root achieves this remarkably. A blend of adventure horror, science fiction contraptions, and chilling monsters, it serves as a potent reflection of our society. Having thoroughly enjoyed the initial Bitter Root epic, I find The Next Movement's opening issue equally compelling, promising another memorable imaginative journey. Sanford Greene's art is both uniquely gritty and strikingly lovely. His visual storytelling consistently elevates with each new project. David F. Walker and Chuck Brown deliver a script that expertly blends history, sci-fi, and horror. This is genuinely one of the finest series currently in production. Dive in and enjoy! |

Detective Comics (2016) #1090

Tom Taylor's Detective run begins with a strategic long-term approach. He skillfully expands Batman's mythology. He also introduces a life-altering choice for Bruce Wayne and creates intriguing mysteries for the Dark Knight to solve. The potential for these elements to unfold in captivating ways is immense. Taylor's writing is exceptional, and Mikel Janin's art perfectly complements the story. |

Green Lantern Corps (2025) #1

I've been eager for more John Stewart action ever since Phillip Kennedy Johnson's excellent 'Green Lantern: War Journal.' This new Green Lantern Corps series delivers Stewart and the rest of the Corps in a promising start to what could be a great run. The writers demonstrate a strong grasp of characterization and skillfully build upon recent Green Lantern events. The art is perfectly suited for an interstellar series of this scope. I eagerly anticipate future installments. |

Green Lantern Corps (2025) #2
Mar 19, 2025 |
Green Lantern Corps #2 effectively builds upon the strong foundation established in the first issue. This issue draws heavily from established Green Lantern lore. While I'm not a die-hard Green Lantern enthusiast, I follow John Stewart's storylines closely, and I found the narrative easily accessible. Given John Stewart's defining characterization in Bruce Timm's animation, the influence is evident here. Jeremy Adams and Morgan Hampton are delivering strong writing in this series. Fernando Pasarin's artwork is ideally suited for this series, with concise storytelling. |

Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2023) #26
Dec 4, 2024 |
I'm not a fan of Federico Vicentini's art style for this series. I believe Spider-Man comics generally benefit from a cleaner, more classic art style. I find this style to be chaotic and confusing. However, Cody Ziglar's writing is exceptional. He has done more to develop Miles Morales' character and his supporting cast than any other writer. This issue is a prime example, showcasing the excellent characterization of the relationship between the Vulture and his granddaughter, Tiana. It would be ideal to have a different artist to fully complement Ziglar's strong writing. |

Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2023) #27
Dec 7, 2024 |
Cody Ziglar continues to impress with his strong grasp of comic book storytelling. He excels at crafting intricate character relationships and dramatic arcs that evoke the best qualities of soap opera writing. While the flashy super heroics draw readers in, it's the compelling cast of characters and their evolving dynamics that truly captivate. |

While Cody Ziglar's writing is commendable, the art in this series feels unpolished. Visual storytelling is crucial in comics, and I'm finding it difficult to continue supporting the book without significant artistic improvement. |

Sam Wilson, Captain America (2025) #1
Jan 3, 2025 |
This first issue attempts to tackle a lot. While filled with social commentary, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it leaves little room for developing the core mystery of the Eaglestar company. A better balance between story and commentary is needed. The art is good but not spectacular. I'm curious to see where the rest of the series takes us. I believe Nick Spencer handled the Sam Wilson version of Captain America the best, and I haven't seen the character written as well since. I see some potential here, but only subsequent issues will tell. |

I've been a comic book reader for a long time, but I've never been a huge X-Men fan. Honestly, there are only a few X-Men runs that truly resonated with me. However, this current Storm series has completely captivated me. The writing is exceptional, and the art perfectly complements the story. The first three issues have been an absolute delight to read. |

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #12
Dec 26, 2024 |
This issue masterfully utilizes dramatic tension. We witness a well-written Christmas gathering featuring the Parkers and Watsons, with the added intrigue of J. Jonah Jameson. I understand that Marvel's leadership may prefer to avoid a committed relationship between Peter and Mary Jane in the main series. However, I believe MJ and Peter have achieved iconic status as a couple, much like Lois and Clark. In the hands of a skilled writer, their dynamic can remain captivating and entertaining. Now that Miles Morales embodies the teenage Spider-Man, couldn't Peter evolve into an older, more committed figure in the main series? I am pleased that Ultimate Peter can enjoy a committed relationship with MJ in his universe, as this issue demonstrates how effectively it can work. And Marco Checchetto's artwork, as always, is exceptional. |
