Magic’s New Master: Absolute Zatanna Debuts as the "Season of the Witch" Begins!
Absolute Wonder Woman 16 begins "The season of the witch" five issue arc. The issue begins a flashback of young Diana in Hell, visited by Aphrodite. From there get a ridiculous scene with Steve Trevor, and some sinister back and forth with Veronica Cale in Area 41 with her scientists. We swipe to Museum exhibition opening where Diana is the guest of honor. I'm still not clear why Diana passes out, but we get teen Diana in Hell training with Artemis. When she awakens seconds later, she can't feel her magic. Zatanna appears with the Absolute Suicide Squad. Diana and Zatanna lock eyes. We get a flashback to AB WW#14 and are reminded that Zatanna controls Diana's magic when they in each other's presence.
Pros:
I love the design of Zatanna. She's cute, but also you can tell she's trouble in a pixie haircut. I am always happy to get a young Diana in Hell flash back, a weird sentence to type. We got a great deviation from the main universe, by all appearances. Barbara is not the Cheetah!!! I was excited to see Giganta, a favorite WW rouge of mine. We got more Ferdinand the Minotaur and Barbara and less Etta Candy and her useless sister. I really enjoyed the fast paced story telling, and Sherman's art has grown on me over 16 issues.
The Cons: Even in this universe the writers can't write Steve Trevor. You just don't resign from the military and walk out. How has the city embraced Diana so quickly? This is supposed to be the universe devoid of hope. Yes Diana is a beacon of hope but this happens so quickly it doesn't feel earned. Can we get a scene with Circe??? Have they forgotten her???
I really enjoy this book. I highly recommend this series
I give Absolute Wonder Woman #16 a 7.5 out of 10.
