If there was a template on how to set up an anchoring character for a story, it would probably be Rorschach. This was an introduction so well done that it took me two whole chapters to realise the story wasn't actually about Rorschach; well, either that or I'm a dumbass. The chapter establishes the character dynamics between Rorschach and the rest of the cast in an extremely immersive way by havin g Rorschach be the the one to discover the death of the Comedian and start conducting an investigation, informing the other (former) members of the Watchmen along the way. The chapter also does a really great job of switching the perspective from Rorschach near the end. From a second or third read standpoint, it appears to be parodying the usual "mysterious and isolated" detective trope, and very well might i add. The use of vibrant and notably highly, HIGHLY saturated colors, is likely the first thing you'll notice when picking up this issue but the use of these solid colors symbolically is a theme throughout the twelve issue series. One of the more interesting details about the comic is it's rigid panel structure as well as the page being split into three equal parts. This I feel this strict layout grounds the comic and says to the reader “if you're expecting action, put this book down”. Overall, this comic book is extremely influential and is widely regarded as the greatest comic of all time and reviewing it without bias is really hard but I'll try.more
