This is a solid first issue. The writing presents us the world, as well as some main characters and the artwork, makes the reading compelling though it might not to that to everyone. 'The Mall' establishes itself well in a post-apocalyptic tale that is fast-paced, mysterious and scattered with intriguing characters. It's a little Mad Max, a little Walking Dead, and some of The Fugitive thrown in for good measure. This introduction to the devastated remnants of civilization holed up in Mall establishes that things are rough all over, especially if you've been set up for the murder of a rival gang leader. In the end, the comic feels like a person running from people in costumes. The setting and those costumes could easily be replaced with little to no impact. Mall #1 sets up an interesting concept but spends too little time fleshing it out to benefit from what could be a truly intriguing world and comic. Read Full Review

There's sadly not much in Mall #1 to instill any real sense of attachment to the story. It may be a book about the end of the world, but whichever world ended doesn't really feel like our own, making this mall one you may not want to visit. Read Full Review

This mall isn't just a building; it's a survival ground for characters living in complex caste systems based on their status within the walls of consumer-driven capitalism. As a setting, an over-sized Mall of America style building served as a perfect battleground for humans on an Earth no longer hospitable to our species. I learned a ton about the world in the first issue without being overloaded with any information dumps, the smooth lettering by Jim Campbell never left me struggling to follow the intricate story. I can't wait to learn more regarding the protagonist Andre, especially his father's high status, connections, and how long he can survive being the mall's most wanted. As the story says, malls seem huge but become very small when they become war grounds between desperate people, as anyone who's camped out for Black Friday can attest. Read Full Review

This book is both completely fun and completely brutal. So far, art included, it’s all a bit sketchy though. I love the look of the different gangs but need more than basic tribalism to feel fully engaged. Still there is more than enough here to make me excited to return next time.
