Shadowman #9

Jordan knows what he's doing here with Shadowman and his final battle with Darque. This is the climax and Jordan doesn't fail to deliver. Shadowman is a great mix of horror and action with a touch of heart. This is a title that any fan of both genres will find satisfying and exciting. For ten issues, (including issue 0) Shadowman has been an enjoyable read, but it needs consistency in the art department or it will start to lose readers. That being said, Valiant has got some underrated writing talent on their payroll, and this book is proof. Jump on the bandwagon now! Read Full Review

Art isn't the only problem, as the ending of this arc is a confusing one. Justin Jordan brings everything together in this issue, but how and why events fit together isn't clear. Even after reading the book twice, I'm still not sure how Shadowman defeated Master Darque. He used Darque's own magic to suck Darque into a magic tower that then exploded? I think? Maybe. Anyway, there are some cool scenes here, but they get lost in a convoluted ending that tries too hard to bring everything together. Read Full Review

If you've been reading the series then definitely grab this issue since it holds all the resolution you've been reading towards, but overall it's pretty average. I think the next issue might end up being a lot better because it will have some real consequences to deal with from this issue, but we'll have to wait and see. If you're a new reader I would go back to the beginning of the arc at the very least because the story will develop quite differently for you, but do not start here. I'm not ruling this series out, but I do think it needs to slow down in general and build Shadowman's world more before throwing him at another big bad guy; right now he has nothing to lose and nothing to fight for.
