The careful characterization, brilliant designs, and interesting interactions evolve X-Men Red #13 into something truly great. You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Jul 25, 2023When a huge amount of story moves glacially towards a massive crossover event, every now and again, an issue feels like it's just connecting out major moments rather than existing as a compelling story in and of itself. Thats the case with X-Men: Red #13. There seems to be a lot of waiting around to make sure that everything is in place before Ewing can move on to more important stuff that's going to be much more consequential than this issue. My goodness xmen red was a ride man. As I started it admittedly I began getting frustrated with myself as I was having trouble comprehending some of the dialog. However I kept reading and next thing I knew I was so completely enveloped in the story. I was so impressed with this issue. I love lactuca I hope they continue to use and develop that character along with ironfire. It just doesn't get any better than this! When it's all said and done this era of x-men is going to go down as one of my all-time favorite comic book storylines. Absolutely tremendous

To live in peace or war? Thats the question. Genesis is back with a vengeance and disdain towards the current direction of Arakko lead by Storm. With half the ring agreeing with Genesis and the other with Storm a full on civil war of ideologies has begun. The art is awesome in this issue especially the Lactuca scenes. This is one of my favorite issues so far in this series.

I enjoyed the previous issue and it was another really good read, but it wasn't up to the standards set by the rest of the series, in my opinion. However, with Issue 13, we're right back up in 9-10 territory when it comes to overall quality. The bulk of this book is Genesis basically talking down to the Great Ring because of their recent changes in ideology, and I loved it. The Annihilation Staff is a nice touch to her character as well and I'm interested to see what comes of its involvement here. The art of this book is solid as well, not quite Stefano Caselli, but at least we still get him on covers. The next three issues are, currently, supposed to have Yıldıray Çınar on the art duties. Everything I've seen of his is good, so hopeful more

I have to admit I'm losing interest in Arakko. There are sooooooo many mutants clamoring for page time that I can mostly do without this extra planet. Appreciate their weirdness though.

It's certainly momentous, and the words and pictures are appropriately weighty. But I'm holding it to "good" rather than "great". Because the two "History of Arakko" pages are a little too important. They extend and summarize the story in a way that undercuts the actual comics pages around them. It's probably a Catch-22 problem, and this is likely the least-bad way to cover the required narrative ground in the limited amount of pages available. There's also the fact that, despite Al Ewing's hard work throughout this series, I find it really hard to care about the Arakkii characters in this issue. But I should shoulder a share of the blame there.

It's clear everyone loved this. It's clear it's not for me. I don't know most of the characters and the ones I do, I know very little. It feels like a D&D fantasy book but with one dimensional characters spouting terrible dialogue. Clearly I'm missing what others like.
