I am gonna give this issue a solid B because while it was good all around having multiple versions of characters around can get confusing down the line and I would personally prefer a more consistency between the issues going forward. But still overall I do love what this comic has become and what it continues to become. Read Full Review

It felt like the early issues of X-Men Blue were more interested in rebooting classic threats rather than introducing something new. Issue #5 doesn't really break from that trend, but it's at least drawing from more recent characters who I didn't really expect to see again. Overall while not being the best of the series this issue is still a really good read. The chemistry between the characters is so well written that I enjoy all the witty banter between them. There is a lot of setup happening in this issue but it successfully get me excited for the new dynamic Jimmy will bring to the team and what this new villain has in store for our young mutants. As much as I dislike the idea of adding the most knock-offiest of all Wolverine knock-offs to this team, Bunn is still writing a fun and enjoyable X-Men comic. The art has gone downhill since the first issue, though, due to an almost immediate switch in the art team. Read Full Review

Pleasantly surprised by this issue, and "X-Men Blue" as a whole. I sometimes get bored by action-dominated issues, but Cullen Bunn keeps things tight with sharp and witty dialogue, and the Julian Lopez art was excellent, keeping the action interesting. I like Miss Sinister and her band of misplaced mutants. The presence of Jimmy Wolverine doesn't seem superfluous, and I like that there is a mystery with Magneto in the background as well. Burn hinted at alterior motives for Magneto in a previous issue, but isn't forcing the point. I like the subtlety. This is just a really good read.

Marvel is double-shipping a *lot* of titles that don't really need it and this one might be the grand prize winner in that category. Might explain why it's coming off hot and cold for you; I had a similar reaction with #6.

Of the two lead X-Men titles, Bunn's is the most consistently interesting and well-written so far. I'm not sure where it's all heading but it feels like a lot's going on.

Seeing the team with with James Hudson Jr. was very satisfying. I hope that he becomes a more permanent part of the team since he adds a little something to the mix. This is still a pretty consistent issue. It lost a little for me since again we have a team that is being controlled in order to attack the X-Men just like what would happen to the Gold team with the new Brotherhood. After both involved a new form of Sentinel attacking. It adds to the already existing comparisons between the two and makes you realize that Blue has been handling the stories better. The two X teams really need to find a way to differentiate themselves.

Turns out the contemporary Marvel universe is lousy with refugee Ultimate mutants. The X-Men get Jimmy Hudson, but Miss Sinister is pokemon-ing up a lot of others into her "New Marauders." Excellent art, solid characterization, and good dialogue make up for a bit of weakness in the plotting here. The way the Ultimate characters are brought in is fascinating, but the ending frustratingly suggests that the subject is going to get shelved for a while. In the meantime, at least the extensive fight scene in this issue delivers some superb battle banter from Bobby and Hank.

Cullen Bunn is doing a good job of introducing new characters and teams to the fold, but none of them seem to advance much of the overall story. We'll see where it goes from here, but much like X-Men Gold, Blue seems a bit stuck on nostalgia with no real direction.
