X-Force #34

Sadly, the only real disappointment was a huge portion of the art this week that complicated the reading crammed the pages immensely, and made the X-Force #34 a bit difficult to read at times. The detail is great, however, enlarge the panels and choose some colors that make the comic pop. You can still provide a darker tone without muting the appearance and taking away the depth and texture of the issue. After the long Kraven arc, this issue of X-Force really feels like a step up and the start of some plot threads reaching a climax. It is astounding to witness just how far Beast has fallen and just how much he has managed to hide not only from the authorities on Krakoa, but also his own team. And speaking of the team, their story beats also look like they are reaching a boiling point. Sage's drinking has gone completely out of control to the point of causing harm to her fellow teammates. I definitely see this as rock bottom for her and I really hope we see signs of her trying to make ammends and turn around in the next issue. Maverick's presence in the story is kinda meh to me, he didn't do much to really make me have an opinion on his pres ence in the book. An overall improvement to the book that makes it feel like the story is finally going somewhere. more

Beast's march toward cartoonish super-villainy accelerates into a sprint, and Sage, the person best situated to spot what he's doing, is a drunken wreck. The tactical plot developments within the issue don't excite me much (Sevyr Blackmore is far from my favorite Arakkii), but I am fascinated by the bigger strategic implications. And the peek into Sage's psyche is heartbreakingly, tragically beautiful. X-Force remains a slow-motion trainwreck, in an absolutely intentional and supremely entertaining way.

The highlight of this was definitely the stuff with Sage. That was really good. While the stuff with Maverick and the other mercenaries was fun and cool, I wasn't incredibly intrigued in it until Solem showed up at the end and everything tied back to Beast. Hopefully the book, as a whole, is a bit more interesting with the next issue. The main reason this is getting as high of a rating as it is is because of Sage.

I love what they're doing with Sage. I really do! But omg, I do not CARE for Sevyr or Maverick or these Mercs at all. It's all just noise. On top of that, the art is kinda weak. ;/
