X-Force #25 seems like it shouldnt work at all, but Percy and company nail it again. Percy and Gill work very well together in this comic, and the sense of foreboding that they give readers with the beginning of the date scene is so great. X-Force #25 is not your usual superhero comic by any means. It balances an impactful and emotional subplot and a surfer story that generally works. This issue isn't so much about surfing as it is Wolverine's romantic nature of loving life, danger, waves, and mysterious women. It's just odd he didn't question some stranger coming to Krakoa simply to surf. Read Full Review

It starts slow and it looks like a super-fluffy breather episode. Then the romances turn sour and a proper X-Force plot kicks in. Me, I liked the contrast and I'm interested to see where it goes. (And I'd bet a ton the Quentin-Phoebe thing isn't over.) Solidly above-average storytelling in words and art helped sell me on the initially-goofy content. (Saltier take: Woah, a silver surfboard! We've never seen one of *those* in a Marvel comic!)

What seemed to be more of a filler issue towards the beginning ended up taking an interesting turn by the final few pages. I particularly enjoyed Logan's side of the book. It was a slower build that definitely payed off when Pike end her friends/allies/etc ended up stealing the babies. As for the Quentin & Phoebe side of things, I wasn't quite as invested. I wasn't the biggest fan of how the book handled Quentin previously, particularly in the issue this book itself referenced (#17), but the break-up here just felt a little rushed. However, I feel like that story isn't quite over, so hopefully that side of the book improves as the series continues.

Logan surfing on an adamantium surfboard made by Forge? YES! This kind of goofiness is why I love comics. The Logan part of the story worked more for me than the Quentin/Phoebe parts, which felt really rushed considering the relationship feels like it just got started. I was really starting to enjoy Quentin's character growth and I hope they don't reverse too much of it too soon.

So we've had to suffer through the annoying Quentin-Phoebe relationship just for them to break up all of a sudden? Screw you, Percy! Why the hell did you insist on this so much if it ultimately doesn't go anywhere? Also, pretty predictable story, we need to get back fast to the Colossus plot.

The X-Men have always been about overcoming adversity, so a Canadian rising up to surf on a metal board just makes sense. Seriously though... such a dumb story plot.
