Uncanny Avengers #2

While I'm not reading any of the other X-Men titles, this book continues to give me the information that I need to not be completely lost. It is no easy feat to bring a reader into a part of a larger story without them feeling lost. However, with masterful writing and fantastic artwork, Uncanny Avengers is doing just that! If you have not picked up this title, do yourself a favor and check out the first two issues. You won't regret it, and you will be frothing at the mouth for the next chapter of the story! Uncanny Avengers #2 is a good issue when setting things up. The bigger story of Captain America being a chosen leader, rather than one the mutants are stuck with, is a compelling one that'll be fun to see play out. While I would call this a step down from Issue 1, I still enjoyed it for what it was. I think the problem with this issue is that it felt a little clunkier than the previous one, if that makes sense. Something I did particularly enjoy was the situation with the majority of the rest of the team trying to "demote" Captain America from being the leader. The story itself was fine, but it was Deadpool's take on everything that made this really good. I liked his reaction to it and his commentary about the mutants as a whole. That was probably the strongest part of this issue for me, was everything else was just solid.

The plot develops briskly, helped along by solid (if exaggerated) art. The storytelling here just clears the "good comics" bar. But the author has still wrapped himself in the comforting simplicity of bland, omniscient, past-tense narration. And subjectively, the art rubs me the wrong way. Also, I think Gerry Duggan and Benjamin Percy need to have a Deadpool custody hearing. Granted, this title and X-Force aren't happening at the exact same time. But the character is just too different depending on who's writing him right now.

The ability to turn an interesting premise with awesome characters in the lineup so milquetoast is truly uncanny. Nothing about this book has piqued my interest yet and Duggan seems to be wasting Rogue, Psylocke, and Monet. I did appreciate the X-Men calling out Steve for being the leader of the group, but I don't know if I think anything will actually come of it. Captain Krakoa and his team are icky. The shower scene made me so uncomfortable, even though Andrea seemed to be consenting.

All the good from last issue thrown away. Art is terrible, storytelling is mediocre and everything feels rushed.

Well darn I was really excited when I saw uncanny avengers in the previews a while back but this is simply not for me.
