Ultimates 2 #9

Ewing and Foreman have made Ultimates 2 a series that is synonymous with great story telling, character development, history, and surprises for anyone that appreciates an amazing book. Ultimates 2 is leaps and bounds beyond whatever you think is changing the comic book game right now, I promise. Ewing isn't fucking around with any of you writers out there. Who knew that all it would take is two surprise elements to this Eternity War to flip this whole story on its head? Their ultimate plan for the multiverse was both shocking and quite literal when you reach that last page. Ultimates 2 #9 for the most part felt like it came out of nowhere, but at least there is more clarity to what is being fought for. The Maker is working world-cracking mojo on the multiverse and playing right into the hands of the First Firmament. Can the Ultimates get their ☠☠☠☠ together in time to save Galactus and make a difference in their own book? I tease, but this is an absolutely superb cosmic conflict. By this point Mr. Ewing and Mr. Foreman are on mind-meld level, and the script is ideally slanted to maximize the artist's strengths and minimize his faults. There are more than a few mind-melting twists here, and every one of them (with a single exception) look fantastic. This issue makes mustn't-miss changes to the foundations of the Marvel Universe, and it does so with incredible style and drama.

Ewing’s cosmic saga is finally heading towards its conclusion and guess what? THE ORIGINAL ULTIMATES ARE BACK. I just hope the end up getting killed off again because they had a proper ending

I'd really like to go back and read this series over a weekend. Reading it month to month, it's fairly hard to keep up with and remember exactly what all is going on. Having said that, the story seems impressive, and I give Al Ewing credit for writing something that is completely unlike anything else Marvel is putting out at the moment. I can see Ewing's run on the Ultimates being praised years from now when we look back at it in trade format. For now though, from issue to issue, it can be hard to wrap your head around and follow. Especially for newer comics readers.

I have to admit it. Maybe I'm not smart enough for this book. There's a lot of high concept stuff going on but I'm finding it pretty hard to follow. The Ultimates team are only tangentially connected to it these days. I'm interested to see if Ewing can pull it all together for the finale.
