Mar 04, 2004A fair first issue despite the absence of Jessica's P.I. identity and tendency towards strong language, but one which perhaps suffers in comparison to the high standards set by Bendis' other work in the field. Nevertheless, the development of incidental Daily Bugle characters holds a lot of promise and readers will likely be eager to see where this goes. By no means a solid gold hit from the off, The Pulse still holds a lot of promise by virtue of its down-to-earth approach to superheroics which promises a different point of view from the standard Marvel adventures many of us have grown up with. Actually, not worse, than Alias. And Bendis/Bagley creative team makes me think that it's some kind of unseen Ultimate Spider-Man issues... Feels great. Jonah is a jerk as always, but the beginning of this story is interesting and intriguing.

Most of this first issue is used to explain what will be happening throughout the comic. Fans of Jessica Jones may be a little taken aback by the mainstream writing style that is a toned down version of the character from Alias but I think there is some potential here. This book provides an interesting version of J Jonah Jameison too and gives us a chance to see The Daily Bugle from the inside.

This issue starts where Alias finished off. A pregnant Jessica Jones visits Jonah at the Daily Bugle, for a job as a super hero consultant, where she will be working with Ben Urich. Meanwhile, a woman's body is found "dropped" in a lake. It's a decent introduction with decent artwork especially if you enjoy Bendis' writing. I miss the MAX imprint but it's still a decent issue.
