But Why Tho? - William Tucker
Nov 01, 2021Strange Academy Presents: Death of Doctor Strange #1 is a fun adventure comic that revels in weirdness. There is a heart to the issue as an absent mother begins to connect with her sons, but there is also brilliant comedic dialogue brought in by Young. The art is incredible and majestic, the whole comic celebratory towards artists. The main complaint is that although the kidnapping happens due to the death of Doctor Strange, the rest of the comic doesnt focus on that at all. It would have been nice to see more of how the students were affected by the loss of the Sorcerer Supreme. Read Full Review

I have always loved (lusted) the Enchantress! Artwork was AWESOME. We get a peek at every student, and as always a fulfilling Marvel Plot. I have just one question. WHO are Howie and Heide? I have never seen them before in previous Strange Academy issues. Are they new students or previously unfeatured students?

This cover gives off floating head poster vibes, so yeah, mid. 1/2 The art isn't my cup of tea but I'll give it bonus points for uniqueness. 1.5/2 The dialogue of Enchantress and her children is interesting and helps characterize Enchantress from just being an evil sultry Thor villian. 2/2 The story is a reimagining of Rumplestiltskin, with Enchantress making a deal to give away her firstborn child, that feels both familiar and original. 2/2 The characters are interesting with Enchantress being an evolution of her character that feels like the natural direction for her character to go in. 2/2

This was fun. I'm surprised that I've begun to care about these characters, as that is so rare for new characters in comics.

This comic operates on the "use the tie-in as an excuse to do a bonus issue of an ongoing series" model, so it's a given that it's inconsequential to the event. It's a welcome addition to Strange Academy, digging deeper into the Enchantress's role as a deadbeat mom there. It's also a Mike Del Mundo Weirdworld comic, though, which will be a dealbreaker for some readers. I think it's good, but I'll freely admit it isn't good enough to power through if the art rubs you the wrong way.

Awful stuff, kind of like everything Skottie Young writes. And of course we have another comic writer who feels the need to draw a parallel with the pandemic with kids staying at home instead of going to school. These people are sadistic, I'm starting to think they actually enjoy rubbing it in in our faces and capitalizing off the pandemic. Or they just lack any sort of originality, that may be it too.
