Taskmaster #2

MacKay twists the artifacts of a totally mundane slugfest and turns it into something really, really enjoyable. Superman has been around for the better part of a century. Put him in a different costume with a different identity in a different universe, and he's still going to interact in the same way he has in thousands of various conflicts stretching back to the later 1930s. Somehow MacKay has managed to stage a Superman-style slugfest in a way that makes it feel fresh and exciting, courtesy of a charming villain. Read Full Review

I genuinely really loved this issue. Wasn't expecting something this good from a Taskmaster miniseries, but here we are.

Tony and Nick Fury Jr tackle what they figure is their hardest mission first: Phil Coulson, who tends to hang out with Hyperion these days. "Taskmaster vs. Hyperion" should only go one way -- but look at whose name is on the book. The creators show exactly what you need to do to turn a potentially-boring slugfest into a fascinating struggle. My two favorite bits are the outstanding timing (those planning flashbacks are perfectly placed) and the slurred but significant character revelations Tony shares as he gets clobbered.

Requiring three specific kinesic signatures in order to unlock her computers, Taskmaster is set upon his first target, Phil Coulson, director of the Squadron Supreme of America. However, this brings Taskmaster into direct conflict with the unstoppable Hyperion. Taskmaster is no threat to the godlike being who beats him, effortlessly, to a bloody pulp. But not without a trick up his sleeve, Taskmaster is able to strike Hyperion with his very own “kryptonite” and bring him to his knees, narrowly escaping a most brutal beating. That beating was epic. I seriously felt bad for Taskmaster. I was a huge fan of Hyperion during Hickman’s Avengers, and I’m relatively sure that this is the same one. But who can even tell. For a moment I thought Fury was going to reveal him as King Hyperion from the Exiles. This was a great issue. The artwork of Taskmaster painted with his own blood was extremely well done. Pretty good issue
