When all is said and done, Strange Academy #9 delivers a great one-off story. It introduces new elements to the existing cast, delivers some fantastic laughs, and gets sentimental while blending all these elements in such a way that none detract from the others. Strange Academy #9 is another excellent entry into this series, the past few issues have been some of my favorites and it just seems to be getting better and better. Young has started to focus on the characters a little bit more bringing more depth and incite to them slowly but surely. We are finely getting to know these new characters and it is great. It has certainly gotten me more invested in them. The art continues to be tremendously well done and a highlight of the series. This series is always amazing fun and I really enjoyed this story. It is nice to see Calvin and Doyle hitting it off. Was Calvin dreaming or did his jacket slay one or two of his foster parents? Doyle and Calvin handled the Mindless Ones easily though I was wondering if these were "new" Mindless Ones or the ones working at Strange Academy? Scores for plot and story all around. Artwork, coloring, and lettering are always flawless. Will be hard to wait almost two months for the next issue. Cheers! :)

Family Day at the Academy brings obligatory shenanigans for most of the students. Bereft of parents, Doyle and Calvin head off to share a little character-development adventure. This issue crystallized the Strange Academy formula for me: Every student has a Backstory Mystery, a Magical Talent, and a Crush. Mix-and-matching those attributes can generate a lot of plot mileage, and continued artistic excellence from Humberto Ramos will bolster the reading experience. But no character seems to have more than that basic 3-point characterization, and the shenanigans seem to be non-negotiable. Those facts will make it hard for this title to make the leap from good to great.

This series is cute. But it’s really a comic book for kids. Shades of the Jason Aaron X Men Run in which Wolverine was headmaster. Sale cutesy art and light storylines. Entertaining but not much more.
