It's a story with real consequence. Up to this point, the canon books and comics have given us tons of character backstory, location details (who remembers that we had a Canto Bight novel?) and scattered side adventures. Compared to the cataclysmic epics of the Expanded Universe, the canon stories have felt supplementary at best. A notable exception is Soule's own twenty-five Darth Vader comic run, which I consider to be one of the best Star Wars comics of all time. This book is lined up to be another fantastic exception. Rise of Kylo Ren is off to a strong start, depicting a variety of encounters Ben had with figures connected to the Dark Side that feels in line with the tone of the characters' on-screen appearances that feel like organic explanations for how we could turn his back on his former allies. The road to capitalizing on a blockbuster feature film is paved with good intentions and poor executions. On every level, this book felt like it could have been churned out by locking a hundred Ewoks in a room with typewriters. Nothing felt captivating or memorable. Similar to what Soule has done in other Star Wars works, I'm hopeful he can take the couple of wispy strings and sentences that exist regarding all of this and make something engaging and interesting with it – and with the Knights of Ren. The potential is there and I definitely see it in some of what's going on here, especially since so much of what we saw in the film was a matter of perspective from who told it. I like seeing that there were other apprentices that survived as it opens some new paths as does his running to Snoke all while the Emperor is pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Lives up to the hype. The Rise of Kylo Ren does not hide reveals in its first issue. It starts off with a bang, but it still promising enough that you'll want to keep following closely. There's probably a great story to follow.

This is a must read for those that want extra detail not provided in the movies and especially for those that have questions regarding Ben's sudden fall to the dark. The origin of the Knights of Aden seem just as unknown as before this issue came out but I anticipate we'll get more and better backstory detail later.

Prelude: Charles Soule has heavily invested himself in the Star Wars Universe currently, having done Darth Vader and the current Star Wars series plus Lando, Obi-Wan & Anakin and Poe Dameron mini-series'. But this will be his first go in the Sequel series so let's see how Soule goes with The Rise of Kylo Ren. The Good: Knights of Ren is interesting so far. I like this expansion from the Last Jedi. It's really cool seeing this expansion on Kylo and Snoke. The Bad: The art is off, especially for the faces. Admittedly, there's time restraints and faces based on actors are much harder but still. Conclusion: A very strong start for the Rise of Kylo Ren. It answers some questions while creating some others and sets up the intr igue quite well. more

This book seems to be exactly what the current canon needs right now - more stories about unexplored time periods. The writing here is strong, with some great artwork and plot twists. Really excited to see where this goes.

Kylo Ren A.K.A. Ben Solo, is an intriguing individual whos character arch needs to be explored more. The transition to the dark side is something that allows the Star Wars universe to explore a myriad of possibilities. The many factors in Ben's transition to Kylo Ren (Snoke, Knights of Ren, Han, Leigh, Luke and the remaining Jedi recruits) should get their spotlight. The first issue Is well drawn. The first issue was mostly setup for a few storylines and I expect that the upcoming issues will include more action for readers craving light saber battles and force powers. Not a perfect start but a good one.
