Dec 16, 2015Squadron Supreme #1 is a huge issue that will have a long lasting impact on the Marvel Universe. The creative team has come out of the gate with all barrels blazing and I'm excited to see where they take this story next. Dec 17, 2015Although it opens with a bang of gruesome aggression, Squadron Supreme doesn't solely rest on the (admittedly baffling) action sequences, as the nuances of each character are thoughtfully portrayed with subtlety and righteousness. Theyare the anti-binary of right and wrong. I believe in Squadron Supreme as the defenders of Earth, and as beings whobelieve they do what they do for a reason. Dec 17, 2015I like the idea behind this, it's fun to see a take on the Justice League that does manage to feel original if going over slightly familiar ground. I love the art" but" there are some issues: it felt too short, the whole thing was 19 pages long, and a page or two more for some exposition would have been really useful. I knew of these characters and I needed a little guidance, this is meant to be an issue #1 where complete newbies can join in. Dec 21, 2015Squadron Supreme is a book teeming with potential: if built properly, the Squadron could be viewed as a legitimate threat to the Avengers, while making readers care about who these characters are. Given the teaser on the last page, though, it doesn't appear that Robinson is going to waste any time in getting to the Squadron versus Avengers conflict. While there is intrigue in seeing that fight, there are only so many times readers will care about this before it becomes old hat. Squadron Supreme is off to an okay start, but James Robinson, Leonard Kirk and Marvel need to be careful not to allow this team to fizzle out before they've told the compelling story that lives within this new series. Dec 17, 2015Squadron Supreme is a tough book to have work narratively in an editor driven connected universe like Marvel's and sadly the team isn't up to the task. James Robinson is good, but he and the mandatory time-lapse don't give the reader time to understand the characters. Leonard Kirk shows great improvement in his craft with the help of Paul Neary and Frank Martin to ensure the book looks solid but sadly this series does not look like one that can last long given its non-new reader friendly approach and how it works against the box most superhero comics have written themselves in. Leonard Kirk's pencils appear inconsistent with Paul Neary providing varying levels of detail and refinement between individual scenes and pages. Much of the enormous battle falls flat, as neither the movement nor scale of what is occurring is realized. Even the composition of a few key moments fails to land with a big (previously spoiled) death rolling across the finish line, rather than racing. Fantastic intro issue. The Squadron Supreme, while not doing agreeable things, are an interesting and brutal team. I loved the fight scenes and the responses from the citizens and the original Human Torch. Can't wait for the next issue.

As a comic with the context of Jonathan Hickman's New Avengers run this issue was amazing and showed a different side to people trying to do the right thing. It wasn't just violence for shock value since I felt it had weight. You have to realize that Namor not only destroyed Dr. Spectrum's world but he went around with Thanos and the Black Order eradicating hundreds of earths so their reality could survive. It's very interesting to see these people who were affected by the incursions now fighting back. I can't wait to continue reading this title.

I love the Squad, but this was done in bad taste. One long fight scene where one side dominates the other. At a certain point, I wondered "Is this it?" "Want to see what happens next," with Hyperion crushing Namor's skull? Not particularly.

A depressing first issue which by it's very nature cannot have a long run. It relies om the gimmick of violence and shock. I wish we could get back to a more reasonable Squadron, as I used to enjoy them.

Namor's death feels like someone at Marvel asking "Hey, who else is related to the FF, so that we can crap on them?" and Robinson raised his hand and said "There's Namor, and I can have him killed in my book!" and that Marvel exec said "Do it!"

A cold, joyless and boring mess. I have no interest in any of these characters and have only been handed reasons to dislike them. As for Namor, I can't say that I ever liked the guy, but to give Marvel's first anti-hero such a half-assed fate with no weight to it is just a kick in the balls. Not to mention shrugging off the genocide of an entire city. I know James Robinson is capable of better than this and I expect more from the editors at Marvel as well. I know Marvel is throwing everything that they have at the wall right now to see what will stick, but the world would be better off if this comic had never existed.
