There's no sense in competing with world-shaking, bombastic events and status quo changes, given that Amazing Spider-Man will always be the flagship book, but Zdarsky's focus on character and the soap operatics of Spider-Man's life (as well as those of his supporting cast) gives this book its own flavor that he seems perfectly suited to deliver. Another hit in the Spectacular series. This was equal parts fun, serious and silly and it all works great. I enjoyed this a lot more than most annuals and proves once again why the JJJ identity reveal was the best thing to happen in a spidey mag in years.

The main story here is just great--this isn't a mere collection of random stories that have been collecting dust at Marvel offices, but a funny and poignant story exploring Peter and J Jonah Jameson's relationship, past and present. Chip Zdarsky's decision to have Peter reveal his identity to Jonah has really invigorated the character of JJJ, in my opinion. For a guy that is way too easy to portray as a caricature, this Johah has heart and depth, but is still funny to read. Mike Allred's art here is pretty great, and the back-up tale, while slight, had nice art. Really pleasant surprise from an annual.

Spidey hovers around the edges as Jonah struggles with a forgotten rival in the A story. In words and art, it's striving for greatness, and there's a single exceptional page that gets there all by itself - you'll know the one. But the B story is a big bag of nothing special. I do appreciate the little "status quo maintenance" jobs the A story handles, answering questions like "what happened to that nice standup comic lady?" and "how'd Jonah get another radio show gig?" It's also cute/sad/alarming that Nick Spencer has mined this series HEAVILY for ideas for his own ASM run. This "stalking Jonah" plot will be recycled with a bigger budget and less heart in ASM #11 just six months after this annual - complete with Arcade in a supporti ng villain role. more
