New Warriors #1

I'm all in onNew Warriors. I really hope this comic finds an audience and has a sustained run. For anyone new to Marvel comics looking for a team book to subscribe to, I recommend giving this a try. It is an eclectic group of heroes joined by a talented creative team ofChristopher YostandMarcus To. So you already know the stories will be compelling and the artwork will jump off the page at you. I've heard New Warriors described as Marvel's version of Teen Titans. Now, depending on the connotation, that can be a good or bad thing. Truth be told, the only real similarity is that they're both groups of young heroes. Young superhero teams may offer up all the teen drama you can handle, but for some reason teen drama and superhero fantasy make quite the pairing. We've seen it countless times with the X-Men; we saw it before with Marv Wolfman's Teen Titans; and I sense we'll see it again with Yost's New Warriors. Now, what about that sounds like a bad thing? New Warriors #1 is a pure, fun, and highly enjoyable superhero romp that was honestly needed. It doesn't change or challenge the readers like other titles do, but it gives them something that they could be missing: a real, more traditional superhero book with great characters that can be fun for everyone. Overall a great start for New Warriors. There may not have been a forming of the team, but Christopher Yost definitely went into this knowing how to put them all into the right place at the right time. There's a lot of potential from this story as one that focuses on younger heroes, those new that have come into power(mutants and inhumans), and the threat that all of them face when up against someone like the High Evolutionary. This book certainly is worth picking up with the hope that having this many on the same team doesn't make it hard to manage. Read Full Review

The whole of the artwork here is eye-catching without forcing the reader to be distracted from the story, and in truth, the artwork is a complement to the writing. That gives it 4 out of 5 stars. The reason it didn't get a perfect score is simply because it's a beginning, and seaders shouldn't expect something rarified or exceedingly grand without knowing what's to come. The New Warriors are coming back, sort of. There's a new mystery developing that will pull together the latest incarnation of the team. It's a great feeling seeing the story develop rather than having the status quo already in motion and being expected to just accept it as the new starting point. Chris Yost and Marcus To are cranking up the fun and energy in their corner of the Marvel Universe. Even though the issue was paced a little too quick, the story is definitely one to look forward to and we're positive Yost has a lot of character development in the works that was missed this issue but one the stage is properly set the characters will have their time to shine. Read Full Review

I come out of New Warriors #1 less bowled over than eager to be convinced. The constraints of the story make it hard to feel definite about this particular series, however Yost, To, and Curiel have made a compelling argument for their partnership. So, even if this book is mostly solid broad strokes introductions, it's easy to be optimistic for its future. Read Full Review

It's nice to see a new team book from Marvel, even a relaunch of an old one, that isn't yet another X-Men or Avengers franchise. It seems to me that the Marvel Universe has largely been divided into those two halves, and that there's less and less room for books to stand outside those two barely overlapping circles on the company's venn diagram. In this respect I worry for the New Warriors' future, but on the merits of the story and art alone I'm utterly pleased. Read Full Review

But the story by Christopher Yost doesn't hold up its end of the deal. The first issue of a team comic is usually the "gather the team" story, but we only get part of that here. There's more ground to be covered, and it's possible the story will pick up once the gang is together - but so far, it's not holding my attention. Read Full Review

Marcus To's pencils are clean and dynamic. This is great superhero comic art on display here. Yost weaves the perfect first issue intro tale. It's not all shits and giggles though, as there is a pretty serious threat that keeps popping up rather violently and seems to be the plot device which will eventually see the whole team come together. The book's solid dialogue emphasizes the outstanding characterization that Yost uses to flesh out the personalities of the "new" New Warriors. Read Full Review

One of the things I remember from the original series is that even though it was a team of younger heroes, they were heroes nonetheless and they did not shy away from any type of villain or situation and it looks like the creative team has set this new iteration of the New Warriors on a similar path. There are some familiar faces and several new characters that have a big challenge ahead of them right out of the gate. Readers who are looking for something "new" and fun to read should pick up this book. It's good to see "New Warriors" on shelves again. It was a fan favorite a long time ago. This first issue is very much a "Hey guys we got all these characters in different places lets start fixing that". So unfortunately we don't have the full team on display yet, infact we haven't even met everyone. In short, while I do hope that more classic Warriors appear (are Silhouette and Rage dead yet?), this book has the makings of something interesting, and helps to cushion to loss of the latest chapter of Young Avengers, filling the niche of "teen super-duper teamup" admirably and looking great in so doing. New Warriors #1 may be the sixth volume or some such, but it manages to make the concept of the group attractive for the first time since Version 1.0, introducing some cool new characters and making me happy to award it 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. The New Warriors title alone will cash in on a lot of nostalgia but not much else. Marcus To fans will be pleased but readers hoping for a team book with heart will be sorely disappointed. It's hard to have a team book without a team in place and Yost's disjointed approach just isn't gelling. Coming off a relative hit with Scarlet Spider, I'm this book will get a real chance to sink or swim but right now it looks like it's taking water. Read Full Review

New Warriors #1 is a decent comic. If it wasnt for the current state of comics, it would probably be higher on my list of recommendations. If you want to give it a shot, you could always do worse. New Warriors is a little rough around the edges. It's got a long way to go before it justifies a spot on your pull list, but it's not all bad. If the creative team an manage to make every page as compelling as the Scarlet Spider pages, this could become a pretty great book. Also, more Nova is always a good thing. All in all, "New Warriors" #1 is completely competent and an enjoyable enough superhero comic, as well as one that deserves kudos for handling a tough reintroduction to a large roster. However, it's just not an issue that's going to leave an impression over time, and unless you're already very attached to the characters, I'm not sure there's enough to compel readers to return. I didn't care for it. Mostly because it's just a generic superhero story, and those just don't do it for me anymore. Maybe there's an audience out there for a comic where a bunch of colorful superheroes show up, team up and fight evil, but I need more in my comics. I was keen to pick this book up, purely down to the Nova association, and while the book isn't necessarily bad, it does suffer from ‘team-building-first-issue syndrome', which I think could have been avoided. I put the issue down with no inclination to learn what comes of the big threat, or how these characters are going to come together, overcome their differences and learn to work together as a team. while Chris Yost may be no Alan Moore this series is just good old fun, and even though Civil War screwed them over, it's still nice to see the new warriors together is some capacity, even in a series that is quickly cancelled also I am an unabashed fan of Kaine so seeing him in here is always a plus, plus he has some really funny moments in here
