While the Avengers effectively take a back seat in their own title, Bendis is doing some great character work for his revitalized backwater villain. One could argue that the a storyline like this one might find a more natural home in a title other than New Avengers, but it's certainly a well-done affair that has its merits. Read Full Review

The cliffhanger introduction of another magic-based character (seemingly unrelated to the story so far) makes me wonder whether this arc is going to amount to little more than a tour of the magical corners of the Marvel Universe, with an arbitrary character chosen as the new Sorceror Supreme at the end. Even if that's the case, these most recent couple of issues have been more entertaining than the last year of New Avengers has been, and with Chris Bachalo on art I'll definitely be back for more next issue. I wish I could say more, but not a whole lot really happens in New Avengers #52. It definitely has some great moments, but as a whole it feels like a series of starts and stops. As a result, it is frustratingly inconsistent. Read Full Review

Once again, there's a split approach with the art, and it works in this context. The mystical battle sequences are illustrated by Chris Bachalo, who delivers some of his strongest work in recent memory. Of course, the strength of Bachalo's work here simply emphasizes the comparative weakness of Billy Tan's art, which serves to bring the Avengers scenes to life. Those scenes are so conversational, and the dominant tone is meant to be one of reassurance, of friendship. Tan's style just isn't suited to conveying softer moments. Read Full Review

Another poor issue. Marvel, get a regular art team for this book. Force Bendis to focus on the main characters. The search for a new Sorcerer Supreme should be exciting. This book was far from it. Read Full Review
