Moon Knight #14

A story I will not hesitate to re-read, to share, or all of the above. I just hope Marvel gives this series a worthy treatment, collecting the whole run in one oversized, hardcover volume to showcase the talented work. Jeff Lemires run on this book has been groundbreaking. A complex and often confusing character piece, it featured no crossovers with any other corner of the Marvel universe. It focused solely on Moon Knight and his supporting cast. Its the perfect blend of the best previous runs, such as the original 1980 series and the recently popular 2014 series. Its called back to every good part of the characters and mythos and helped heal some of the wounds done by lesser writers. It is one of those runs that could be an end to a character. What makes Mark Knight #14 such a powerful conclusion to the series is that Marc does not "defeat" his mental illness. He copes with it. The way Lemire, Smallwood, and Bellaire choose to end the series puts the character in a position where he can have new adventures with his other identities without being plagued by them. Marc may have days where he's Steven Grant, or Jake Lockley, or even days where he isn't sure. But he'll always be Moon Knight. Read Full Review

It is sad to see this book come to an end. Moonknight will go down as one of those great series that I will only recommend to certain people. With a more abstract storytelling approach some may not be able to get invested. For myself I found this to be a deeply emotional tale full of tragedy and triumph. Using multiple personalities can easily become a gimmick and in a way Lemire doubled down on that gimmick to create something undeniable original. The only word I could use to describe this issue is "beautiful". Marc’s last speech is emotive and the character is finally happy with his life. He’s considerably evolved in the series: it was his death and his rebirth. This conclusion is the culmination of everything the author has introduced from the beginning and it's enough for me.
This last arc is a bit less inspired. The flash-backs are definitely the most interesting part and they are always enjoyable, specially in this issue how they interact with the present. However, the main plot is rather deconstructed and I feel like it didn’t really move in the first parts. But finally, the ending is great and it didn't let me down.
Even if the writing is excellent, what makes the comic even better is Greg Smallwood’s art. He gives a unique aspect to the comic-book, with incredible visual ideas and well-expressed faces. He’s one of the few artists who could have drawn this. Also, his covers are truly the best I've ever seen. Jordie Bellaire’s colors are splendid and Cory Petit’s lettering is fantastic.
Before reading this series, I didn’t know Moon Knight. I picked-up the first issue because Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite authors. It immediately mesmerized me, because I had never read a story like this before. I just don’t have words to describe how I loved this series. It’s always innovative, with new ideas each issue. The cliff-hangers were among the most mind-blowing I’ve ever read. The author was constantly improving and, at some point, the series couldn’t be better. In 14 issues, he never disappointed me.
Now, Moon Knight is my favorite Marvel super-hero, Greg Smallwood is one of my favorite artists and this series is one of my favorite comic-books. Thank you Jeff, Greg and Jordie for this masterpiece: it changed my life as a reader. more

What can I say about this entire Moon Knight run? I am so sad to see this ending, but what a way to do it. I am not so much an art person as I am a story guy, so with that being said, I think the art has been absolutely phenomenal. This issue wrapped up the series nicely and I really can not get over that it's ending!!!!!! Thank Lemire for a fantastic story. I am curious to see what happens in the next Moon Knight installment, as this run left the door wide open to if Marc Spector really knew Konshu or if he made it all up, which could change the character in the future.

For today, Khonshu bends to Marc Spector's will, cast down as merely a manifestation of his mental illness. Who knows what tomorrow might bring? Of all the brilliant things in this finale, the very best might be the fact that it steers well clear of anything as trite as "Kill the bird-god, cure the illness." Marc is not cured, but his triumphant realization is that even with flaws and damage, he is a good man. He's confident again that whatever this tricky thing called reality is, it includes a place for Moon Knight. This issue didn't deliver the full-on origin recap that I was expecting, but there's no disappointment in getting this tremendously focused and powerful conclusion instead.

It was the enjoyable art continued to keep me on board. The nothing changed "safe" conclusion, of merely memories mashed misadventures, felt like a cop out after 14 issues of build and bucks.
