Ultimately, however, this isn’t what will bring readers back – though some might argue the promise of more Alex Ross is sufficient. Instead, Marvel offers readers an opportunity to enjoy some “no strings attached” stories about the heroes they love, and given the strength of this first issue, it is likely the follow up will be well-worth reading, too. I appreciate the scope and expanse of how Nightmare may be interwoven throughout this whole series. Comic Crusaders - Kevin Given
Mar 06, 2020This issue is a splendid homage to the silver age of comics that I grew up with. Theses stories are simply told about a time that was much simpler then today, at least it was for me, the only thing I had to worry about was where to get the $1.25 that I needed per month to collect the five comics I collected on a regular basis! Some parts were better than others. I enjoyed it though overall and we will see how other stories are told as the series continues.

The Spider-Man story was off-putting and odd. It had good and bad aspects to it. The Avengers story felt like it was straight out of Stan Lee/Jack Kirby's run. If you're into that, you'll enjoy it. Overall, this wasn't an amazing start to this miniseries.

In the frame story, Nightmare has conquered the world, and the anthology strips are presented as peeks into the dreams he owns now. The frame is outdoing the content so far. The Avengers strip is a maybe-too-successful recreation of Lee/Kirby Avengers, and the Spidey strip, though arty, is just too roughly-finished to satisfy. This series kicks off squarely in the "catch up on MU, don't spend money on it" zone.
