King In Black: Namor #1

King in Black: Namor #1 is a great tie-in comic because it doesnt feel like one. Whilst the Swift Tide is a part of the event as a whole, it is seamlessly connected to the underwater universe that Namor occupies. It may not be incredibly interesting to readers that have latched on because they want to complete the crossover reading list, but hardcore Marvel fans will enjoy the insight into the life of one of the publishers oldest characters. King in Black: Namor #1 isn't a bad comic but it also doesn't feel like much of a tie-in. That will hopefully come later. As a mini-series on its own, it's a good start with some interesting aspects to build off of. This will be an event mini-series that we'll likely have to judge on the whole than individual parts. As a lifelong Namor the SunMariner fan (Pronounced Sub Mariner and not SubMareener) I have been thrilled with this King In Black tie in. The past connections with Krang, Attuma, Lady Dorma are all very well thought out and I LOVE the underwater artwork. Yes - the tie in to King In Black with the Oil Slick Villains is only hinted at in the beginning but I expect this to develop more as we go. I am very excited to see more. :)

Not much of a King in Black tie-in (yet), but this was a deep dive into continuity and that was fun for me. Not sure how other people will react to it.

Namor thinks back to a bright (for now) teenage adventure. He and Attuma, promising princelings, are sent on an epic quest with the Swift Tide, the premier ocean heroes of the day. How does it tie into the King in Black? Who knows, so far! The art is retro in a good way, the script … not quite as good-retro. Mr. Busiek gets a little too deep into his "exposition-soaked Bronze Age author" character. It's still a good comic if you like retro, and I'm optimistic about the event ties firming up in the future.

I am a huge Namor fan, but I found myself really not caring about what was going on. I was hoping for a prese nt day story rather than a young Namor. Here’s to hoping this series catches up to current events.
