Jan 18, 2023Hulk #11 picks up with Hulk getting to know the inhabitants of the gamma world by playing their favorite game “Godball”. Ryan Ottley pulls double duty here in the writing and art department with Marte Gracia on colors. While the story isn't the most compelling, it still manages to be fun for what it is as Hulk bonds with the people of the planet while sowing the seeds for tragedy and Hulk-like catastrophe in later issues. I'm finding this a refreshing arc. Not everything has to be end of the world/time. A little world building meanwhile hinting at mounting tension in the shadows

I have some worries about the pacing. Why was there a whole issue dedicated to this made up sport? If we didn't have a finite number of issues left, I'd be less concerned. It was fun though.

As a fan of this run so far, I wasn't sure what to expect when I found out that Ottley (one of my personal favorite artists) was going to be taking up the writing duties here. After reading, I wouldn't say the scripts are bad whatsoever. However, they're just a little "generic," if that makes sense. The art is great, as usual, and the story itself is good, but I just wish the actual dialogue was written a little better. Hopefully it can improve as this run approaches its conclusion.

Not bad for a new writer, but this series is just sputtering to its cancellation, destined to be as forgotten as the Jason Aaron and Mark Waid runs.
