If Hickman keeps going where it looks like he's going, this series could have reality-ending consequences on a bigger scale than one we've seen in some time. Magic, and its various depictions, sit at the heart of G.O.D.S. #4 just as the book makes its first foray into depicting the true forms of abstract beings. Hickman retains the human approach to the story as Robert and Wynn lie at the center of the issue. Schiti elevates these two in a series of repeating panels that showcase the art and colors genius approach to depicting the manipulation of time and spells. Schiti is also allowed to deepen Wynns character while revealing the otherworldly designs for abstract beings like The In-Betweener and Oblivion. With four issues under its belt, it has become clear that this series is a consistently great exploration of character and cosmology. Read Full Review

Plot Doctor Strange and Wyn face off against Oblivion, a being created by Inbetweener through Robert Forson, an A.I.M scientist who was recruited for this purpose as a child. Donctor Strange and Wyn manage to stop the threat of Oblivion and discover where Robert was trained, in a kind of cube that is a door to other dimensions created by the Inbetweener. Stopping Oblivion managed to momentarily stop the BABYLON EVENT that everyone fears. Wyn meets Mia the new member of TNOOT trained by Aiko and Dr Saint-Maur Cercle, Wyn discovers that Mia actually has magical abilities and that she was recruited as a trap. Wyn and Doctor Strange work very well as a team. With new revelations and more action, this installment continues to delve in to this complex and attractive new universe of characters. Art Full of details that are elevated to another level of quality with different textures, where they show a universe of places, beings, designs that are as overwhelming as they are amazing. A super interesting issue here. Schiti's art continues to be great, and I'm still really enjoying the world that Hickman is building here. I think he told a really good origin story to start this issue off with Robert. I'm very interested to see what happens the next time Wyn and Aiko see each other, considering the confrontation they were about to have in this issue.

You have to know what you're in for with Hickman at this point, so this kind of indulgent storytelling is to be expected. These early issues are built entirely on trust that Hickman knows how to land the plane, which I think he's more or less earned. I'm skeptical that this will be Marvel's Sandman--to do that he'd have to be a little more aggressive about giving the characters distinct identities--but on the whole, so far so good.
