Daredevil: Black Armor #1

Overall, Daredevil: Black Armor #1 is an excellent debut issue that shows why Chichester is a true storyteller and makes you want to go and read his original Daredevil run. The story is exciting and while it doesn't add to the time period it uses it nicely. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. It's a marvelous opening issue that tickles the nostalgia to get readers to return with enough hype that newer fans will want to check out this throwback suit. D.G. Chichester and Netho Diaz give us the best of past and present with their modern-styled trip to a memorable era of Daredevil. Daredevil: Black Armor #1 is a solid debut issue that slots too easily into the era it is harkening back to. The book is missing a vital narrative brazenness that books from the 90s were happy to engage with, instead opting for a more constrained introduction. That paired with an art style that is much less frantic and more modern in approach, makes for a quick but enjoyable read. Daredevil: Black Armor struggles to find an identity, trying to play as both a nostalgic look back at a very specific Daredevil era while channeling elements from the more recent runs. This comic has a shocking narrative, with no respite between action sequences and revelations, where this new uniform highlights how lethal Daredevil is. The art is detailed with exciting dynamism, elevating just how deadly Daredevil looks in this new uniform. The facial expressions are very precise. Summary Matt Murdock not only must have a new uniform for the threat Hell's Kitchen faces, he must also invent a new alias to investigate the crime from the inside.

I don't react well to comics where the top storytelling priority is, "Here's the current status quo for the protagonist and all of his supporting cast." The tiny shreds of actual plot development are lost in the clutter of superfluous world-building. The dated, uninspired scripting certainly doesn't help.
