Black Panther & the Crew #1

Black Panther and the Crew #1 is a great model for a team comic first issue. There is more than adequate context, character work, and storytelling. This series is already a gem for the Marvel line, and Im grateful that we have another comic that can address real issues in an organic manner without pulling punches. I've been fanboying for this new iteration of The Crew, and it came through with the quarterback sneak hitting us with references of Little Mogadishu from the original series, as well as the Americops prior to the ones Sam Wilson encounters. Harvey and Coates did their homework and not only did their own world building with new characters, but seamlessly incorporated unique happenings taking place in other series as well. Other than Ta-Nehisi Coates' characterization of Misty Knight,Black Panther and the Crew#1 is a knock-out combination of a generation-spanning murder mystery, ripped from the headlines thoughts about police brutality and capitalist systems, and eventually superhero team-up action. So, yeah - count me as being borderline-impressed by Black Panther & The Crew #1. Low expectations may have played a part in that, but even going in "blind," so to speak, I probably would have walked away wanting to know what would happen next. With the writing duties being farmed out (at least partially) next month, we'll see if things suffer at all, but I feel reasonably confident that the groundwork has been laid for a nice little series here that we can probably look forward to at least 12 (or thereabouts) issues from. If you're expecting things to kick into gear right away based on the awesome cover. You won't get that, instead, Ta-Nehisi Coates takes the time to flesh out the main character who will carry this title for the time being. This first issue reads more like a grounded cop drama starring Misty Knight. Most of the characters on the cover don't even put in an appearance. But despite the weird branding and the sometimes agonizingly slow pace, this first issue does succeed in exploring a different side of the Marvel U. Read Full Review

I like Black Panther and the Crew #1. I wish I loved it, but sometimes just liking something is enough. We know what kind of talent Ta-Nehisi Coates is, and while his books may take a while to get well and truly going, that talent is still on display, one way or another. Pair that point of view with an art team who gets this kind of superhero story visually and you have a book that people can like, and perhaps even love eventually. Ta-Nehisi Coates is a big part of why the current BLACK PANTHER series is shaping up to be my favorite solo run of the title character, ever. His writing is smart and dense (occasionally, overly so) and a pleasure to read. His Black Panther feels like a superhero living in the real world (and it's been a long time since Marvel has felt like "the world outside your window"). His stories are a terrific combination of politics, mythology and good, old-fashioned, superheroics. That same storytelling is present in BLACK PANTHER AND THE CREW #1. The first issue is a slow-burn detective tale that is already shaping up to be as complex and multi-layered as BLACK PANTHER is. The weakest part of this issue is Butch Guice's art. While good it i s not nearly up to its usual standards of excellence. SCORE: 7.9 more

A dead activist may light a powder keg in Harlem. His death has already entangled Misty Knight and Storm, and his unfolding superhero history will (hopefully) assemble the rest of the Crew. A fascinating backstory and a very powerful narrative voice for protagonist Misty Knight are up against Ta-Nehisi Coates's fatally glacial pacing and some slightly questionable art in this promising debut. Thanks to the MU delay I know this series died prematurely, but I don't see any probative faults so far.

It's threading the needle with current issues, which is ballsy. I like that the story is taking its time to build rather than the standard 'throw a team together to stop a giant threat' technique that is overused in comics.

I went to the comicbook store and I was very excited to this book. Very excited to see a black team working together. When I got to the store I didn't even buy it. Now to be fair it is a really good MISTY KNIGHT BOOK. It really is a good book for misty knight fans. BUT ITS SUCKS FOR A TEAM BOOK. WHEN YOU HAVE A TITLE CHARTER THAT IS NOT EVEN IN THE FIRST ISSUE THERE IS A BIG PROBLEM. Black panther is your selling point, this team working together is your selling point, when you have a lesser know character (a good character) being focused on and not the main title character there is a big problem. Final thoughts: If you are a misty knight fan buy the book. If you are a black panther fan (ironically) I can't recommend this book too you

The only reason why I gave it a bad number because I was expecting a black panther book not a misty knight book and with the prices that marvel are setting their comics I can't tell somebody to waste their money on a book that they want to read with black panther in it and black panther isn't in it. They should have called this misty knight and the crew.
